Behind the Barbie: Billie Eilish's Candid Journey in Music

Billie Eilish is over the moon about her Oscar-winning "Barbie" song. The singer, who teamed up with her brother-collaborator Finneas to create the track for Greta Gerwig's movie, is finally able to discuss the exhausting process of promoting the song and attending numerous awards ceremonies. "Everyone's obsessed with me," she joked to Rolling Stone. "It's all about Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, which is awesome, but after the Oscars, I'm disappearing. I'm outta here."

Despite her plans to take a break, Eilish didn't actually lose at the Academy Awards; instead, she and Finneas became the youngest two-time winners in Oscars history. They also snagged a Golden Globe and a Grammy for the hit song. Reflecting on the success, Eilish admitted in her first non-"Barbie" interview in over a year that the song's popularity exceeded her expectations.

Now, the 22-year-old singer is gearing up to drop her third album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” on May 17. While she's exploring different sounds and more mature themes, she revealed that the album's opening track mirrors the emotional depth of “What Was I Made For?” Interestingly, Eilish and Finneas initially had writer's block when working on the “Barbie” track, and they ended up creating this new song first.

The untitled track became the catalyst for the delicate and emotional “Barbie” hit, sharing its whispered sound and graceful melody. It delves into the misconception that losing weight equates to gaining happiness—a theme that, like the one in "What Was I Made For?," often haunts girls and women as they mature.

Eilish confessed that she has felt like she's been working nonstop since skyrocketing to fame as a teenager. "I realized I haven't had fun in seven years," she said. Despite her illusion of experiencing life, she admitted that she barely went outside for five years. Since 2019, she has released two albums, contributed songs to “No Time to Die” and “Barbie” (winning Oscars for both), headlined Coachella, and won numerous Grammys. Following the exhaustive and very pink “Barbie” promotional tour, she's looking forward to a much-needed break, at least until her next album begins a new cycle.
