Anatomy of a Fall Takes Home Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars

At the 96th Academy Awards, Justine Triet and Arthur Harari snagged the Oscar for best original screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, their gripping drama directed by Triet herself. The film stars Sandra Hüller as a woman accused of murdering her husband, offering a compelling narrative that captivated audiences.

Anatomy of a Fall's victory is especially remarkable as it marks the first non-English language film to win in this category since Parasite in 2019. Triet and Harari faced tough competition from other talented writers like David Hemingson for The Holdovers and Celine Song for Past Lives, making their win even more significant.

This success adds to the film's already impressive awards haul. After clinching the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival in May, it went on to scoop up six European film awards, six Césars, two Golden Globes (including best screenplay), and a Bafta for best original screenplay. Despite missing out on the best international film Oscar, as France submitted The Taste of Things instead, the team behind Anatomy of a Fall has plenty to celebrate.

In her acceptance speech, Triet expressed gratitude to the Academy, joking that she hoped the win would “help me through my mid-life crisis.” She also humorously contrasted the glitz and glamour of the Oscars with the everyday chaos of writing the film during lockdown. Triet shared a candid glimpse into her life, mentioning being stuck at home with her kids engrossed in cartoons, blurring the lines between work and motherhood.
