Angela Bassett Talks Zero Day, Connie Britton Reunion & 9-1-1 Future

Written by Published

Angela Bassett’s loyalty to 9-1-1 is stronger than ever, and she’s always leaving the door open for former costar Connie Britton.

The 66-year-old powerhouse actress recently reunited with Britton, 57, at the star-studded premiere of Netflix’s upcoming political thriller, Zero Day, on February 18 at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The two shared the screen back in season one of 9-1-1, where Britton played 911 operator Abby Clark. Although it’s been years since Britton left the series, Bassett made it clear that she’s welcome back anytime.

“Connie, open door, whenever you want to come back,” Bassett said, reminiscing about their early days on the show. “We worked on that first season, and now we’re in our eighth season. It’s always great to reconnect.”

A Star-Studded Cast in Zero Day

Bassett’s latest project, Zero Day, co-created by Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim, and Michael S. Schmidt, is a thrilling limited series featuring none other than Robert De Niro. This marks De Niro’s first foray into television, making it a historic moment in entertainment.

The plot follows De Niro as former U.S. President George Mullen, who is pulled out of retirement to tackle a dangerous cyber attack. Bassett plays the sitting president, while Britton takes on the role of Mullen’s former chief of staff and right-hand woman.

The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Joan Allen, and Matthew Modine. For Bassett, working with these A-listers was an absolute honor.

“I met Matthew many years ago at a film festival, so getting to reunite was amazing—it’s been decades,” she shared. “And Joan Allen—such a sweetheart! Meeting Lizzy Caplan was fantastic too. I didn’t have any scenes with Jesse Plemons, but I’m a big, big fan.”

From 9-1-1 to Zero Day: Bassett’s Journey

Bassett’s commitment to 9-1-1 remains strong, as she continues to lead the show both in front of and behind the camera. As an executive producer and star, she plays LAPD sergeant Athena Grant-Nash, a role that has cemented her as a force to be reckoned with on television. Her character is married to Station 118’s Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, played by Peter Krause—a pairing that wasn’t originally planned.

“That wasn’t the idea, but Tim [Minear] … just seeing the way it was playing out, how our worlds collided, and the fact that we were the adults, the grown-ups … that’s where the story and the playing of it inspired the journey,” Bassett explained.

Speaking about Krause, she added, “He’s so calm. He’s very sweet, very professional. Likes to have a good time, but he’s just real, honest.”

Bassett has also had a hand in shaping 9-1-1’s spinoff series, 9-1-1: Lone Star, proving that her influence in the television world goes far beyond just acting.

Connie Britton’s Past and Possible Future on 9-1-1

Britton’s return to 9-1-1 back in 2020 for the season 3 finale was a thrilling surprise for fans. After starring in 10 episodes during the show’s first season, she exited the series, with Jennifer Love Hewitt stepping in as 911 operator Maddie Kendall.

Tim Minear, co-creator of 9-1-1 alongside Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, previously teased the possibility of Britton’s return. “The front door, back door, and side door are always open for her to return,” he said during the 2018 summer Television Critics Association tour.

Bassett echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Britton’s presence was deeply missed but always welcome. “So glad we had a chance to work on this piece of television history together,” she reflected.

The Excitement Around Zero Day

Beyond its incredible cast, Zero Day is set to be a must-watch thriller. Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter—whom Bassett has previously worked with on ER—the series promises high-stakes drama, political intrigue, and powerful performances.

Bassett, who has played influential women throughout her career, recently reflected on the impact of portraying the President of the United States in the series. “I can’t believe how timely it was,” she said, acknowledging the real-world relevance of the storyline.

With Zero Day marking De Niro’s transition to television, expectations are high, and the buzz surrounding the series is undeniable.

What’s Next?

For fans eager to catch these two powerhouse projects, Zero Day premieres on February 20 on Netflix, promising a gripping ride into political chaos. Meanwhile, 9-1-1 is set to return on March 6 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, continuing its legacy as one of television’s most exciting procedural dramas.

Angela Bassett remains a dominant force in Hollywood, seamlessly juggling her roles as an actor, producer, and industry icon. Whether she’s keeping the streets of Los Angeles safe in 9-1-1 or leading the nation in Zero Day, one thing is certain—she’s unstoppable!
