The Screen Actors Guild awards on Saturday will see a face-off between blockbuster movies "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," which had clashed earlier at the summer box office under the name "Barbenheimer." Both films are neck-and-neck with four nominations each, including a bid for the best motion picture cast, where they are up against tough competition like "The Color Purple," "Killers of the Flower Moon," and "American Fiction."
The ceremony, starting at 8 p.m. ET (0100 GMT), will be streamed live on Netflix for the first time, part of the streaming service's push into live programming. The awards, decided by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors union, often serve as a precursor to the Oscars, as actors make up the largest voting bloc for the Academy Awards.
Director Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," a historical drama about the race to build the first atomic bomb, is hoping for a win to solidify its position as an Oscars frontrunner. Meanwhile, "Barbie," the feminist doll adventure, could upset the Oscars race if it emerges victorious.
In the acting categories, Emma Stone is in the running for best actress for her role in the dark comedy "Poor Things," competing against Margot Robbie from "Barbie" and Lily Gladstone from "Killers of the Flower Moon." For best actor, Cillian Murphy, who portrayed physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, faces off against Bradley Cooper from "Maestro" and Paul Giamatti from "The Holdovers," among others.
On the TV front, "Succession," the drama about a media mogul and his family, leads with five nominations for its final season. Other notable nominees include "Ted Lasso," "The Bear," and "The Last of Us," each with four nods.
SAG-AFTRA will also honor Barbra Streisand with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions as an actor, producer, director, singer, and writer.
