In Netflix's new movie "Damsel," there's a standout performance from Shohreh Aghdashloo, known for her roles filled with contempt, fragility, and rage. Surprisingly, she voices a fire-breathing dragon, the nemesis of our heroine, Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a noblewoman forced into marriage with Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) of Aurea. Elodie, determined to make the best of her situation, faces the grim reality of being sacrificed to the dragon, a tradition in Aurea.
"Damsel" is presented as a fresh take on traditional fantasy narratives, challenging the typical fairy tale formula. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo infuses the film with suspense and sentiment, especially in Elodie's desperate struggles inside the dragon's lair. The dragon, a menacing force, is voiced with depth by Aghdashloo, adding layers to its character and challenging audience loyalties.
Despite Elodie's earnestness, some wished for more depth in her portrayal akin to Brown's Enola Holmes character. Nevertheless, Brown delivers a solid performance in this gritty tale of survival. "Damsel" offers a suspenseful and sometimes touching fantasy adventure, with Fresnadillo's skillful direction and Aghdashloo's compelling voice work making the dragon a standout character.
