The Foo Fighters hit a major snag at their concert at Citi Field in New York City on Wednesday night, and it wasn’t the kind of snag anyone was hoping for. The band, led by the charismatic Dave Grohl, was rocking out and delivering what looked like a memorable set when Mother Nature decided to crash the party.
Just as the band was really hitting their stride, lightning began to light up the sky. Fans captured the dramatic scene on social media, showing flashes of lightning overwhelming the backdrop. Grohl, ever the showman, tried to rally the crowd despite the brewing storm. “One more?” he called out, trying to keep the energy high. “Alright, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna do one more. That's it. We're gonna do one more, wait this f---ing s--- out. If we can come back, you f---ing know we will, right?” His determination was palpable, but unfortunately, the weather had other plans.
The band attempted to move forward with their iconic track “Everlong,” but the storm made it clear that continuing wasn’t an option. With a heavy heart, Grohl addressed the frustrated fans directly. “Listen, this f---ing sucks, believe me. If I could do something about it, I would,” he said, showing his genuine disappointment. “Just f---ing hold tight,” he initially urged, but quickly shifted gears to prioritize safety.
“No - you guys go get safe,” he corrected himself, urging the crowd to leave the area. “If we can come back and play, we will. But listen, you know we f---ing love you. We know we’ll be back for you motherf---ers right? Go get safe, we'll see you in a minute, alright? Go get safe, we’ll see you soon,” he reassured the fans before making a hasty exit from the stage.
By around 10:30 PM EST, Citi Field made the difficult decision to call off the show due to the persistent lightning. Fans were left both disappointed and bewildered. Many took to social media to express their frustration, questioning why the concert wasn’t moved up earlier in light of the weather forecast and demanding refunds.
In response to the abrupt end of the concert, the Foo Fighters issued a heartfelt statement. “We are so disappointed that we were unable to play our full set for tonight’s fantastic crowd at Citi Field,” the band expressed. “The safety of our fans, the crew, and everyone working in the stadium comes first, so when it was determined that there was no safe way to continue the show in this dangerous weather, we had no choice but to call it a night. We’re grateful for every second we were able to play for you and looking forward to seeing you again – maybe as soon as Friday.” The band is slated to perform another show at the Queens stadium, though it remains unclear if the canceled show will be rescheduled.
For fans eagerly awaiting their next chance to catch the Foo Fighters live, the excitement remains. Despite the weather’s interruption, the band’s dedication to their fans and their commitment to safety are evident. And while the evening didn’t go as planned, it’s clear that the Foo Fighters’ passion and connection with their audience are stronger than ever.
