Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Roars into Theaters

Exciting news from the box office! With the recent hits like Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from Legendary/Warner Bros is now taking the stage, bringing some much-needed energy after a slow Q1 due to the strikes. Sources are buzzing with reports that the monster mash movie, directed by Adam Wingard, kicked off with a thrilling $8M from previews that started at 3 PM Thursday across about 3,400 locations. This marks one of the best previews ever for a Legendary Monsterverse flick, just behind the 2014 Godzilla, which smashed its way to $9.3M. Gareth Edwards' lizard flick went on to bank $38.4M on its first Friday, with a three-day total of $93.1M.

Warner Bros is staying tight-lipped about tonight's estimates, but earlier this week, the opening domestic projections for Godzilla x Kong were riding high at $50M.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes might not be fully on board, giving GxK the second-lowest score for the Monsterverse at 56%. However, RT audiences are roaring with approval, rating it the best of the Legendary lizard monkey movies at a whopping 92%. Let's see if that enthusiasm holds up. The previous fan favorite in the series was 2021's Godzilla v. Kong, also helmed by Wingard, which opened over Easter weekend to a solid $48.1M over five days, reigniting the box office after a long pandemic-induced hiatus. GvK had a dual release, hitting theaters and Warner's streaming service HBO Max simultaneously.

GxK is set to rock 3,850 theaters on Friday, amped up with Imax, PLFs, ScreenX, D-Box, and 4DX experiences. Some Imax screens will also be shared with Legendary and Warner's Dune: Part Two, currently the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far, raking in $239.3M in the US and nearly $600M globally.
