Jurassic World Rebirth Crushes the Box Office, Leaving Brad Pitt’s F1 in the Dust

This past weekend, Jurassic World Rebirth absolutely stomped the competition with a jaw-dropping $91.5 million debut in the U.S. and a massive $318.3 million worldwide haul. It’s the sixth sequel in the mega-successful Jurassic franchise, led by stars like Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, and it’s clear this beast is here to dominate.

A Meteor-Sized Opening

To put that in perspective, Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie — which opened just last week with a solid $55.6 million — took a nosedive, dropping over 50% to a $26 million second weekend. The racing flick just couldn’t keep pace with the roaring dinosaurs tearing up theaters.

The Jurassic World series, dating back to the iconic 1993 Jurassic Park, keeps proving its staying power. Rebirth is the seventh film in the franchise and the fourth Jurassic World installment, and it now ranks as the franchise’s second-biggest premiere ever after 2020’s Jurassic World. Plus, it’s Universal’s biggest opening of 2025 so far — a solid win for the studio.

What This Means for 2025’s Box Office

If there was any doubt about the state of the movie biz after a slow start to 2025, Jurassic World Rebirth and other hits like Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and A Minecraft Movie have put those worries to rest. Midway through the year, domestic box office revenue is sitting at about $4.3 billion, putting 2025 on track to either match or exceed last year’s $8.5 billion haul.

That’s great news for theaters and studios alike — Hollywood is firing on all cylinders again.

Other Box Office Highlights and Surprises

Coming in behind Jurassic World Rebirth, the animated hit How to Train Your Dragon is still flying high, pulling in $11 million this weekend alone. After four weeks, it’s already racked up a $224 million domestic gross, with global earnings nearing $517 million. Clearly, audiences can’t get enough of these dragons.

Meanwhile, Elio, Pixar’s latest intergalactic adventure, is struggling to keep its engines running. It brought in a modest $5.7 million this weekend, with a total domestic gross of just $55 million after three weeks. Its global take stands at $96.7 million — respectable, but underwhelming compared to Pixar’s usual blockbuster standards.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s return to the horror scene with 28 Years Later also held its own, generating $4.6 million this weekend and hitting $60.2 million domestically ($125.8 million worldwide). Given its estimated $60 million budget, the film seems poised to break even or better, which is a win for horror fans.

A Flop and a Dark Horse

Not all sequels are hitting their marks, though. M3GAN 2.0, the AI horror follow-up to the 2022 hit, has underperformed massively. It made just $3.8 million this weekend, sinking to an $18.5 million domestic total so far — a far cry from the original, which had already earned nearly $57 million by this point. Clearly, the sequel didn’t manage to recapture the spark that made the first M3GAN a surprise success.

On the flip side, Materialists, a quietly captivating romantic dramedy by Celine Song starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, continues to impress. In its fourth week, it earned $1.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $33.5 million — quite the feat for an indie film with an estimated $20 million budget. Considering romantic comedies have struggled at the box office for years, this steady hold is a bright spot in the genre.

What’s Coming Up Next Week?

Next weekend’s movie slate promises some exciting variety. We’ve got Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson starring in the screenlife horror flick Skillhouse, the political thriller Sovereign featuring Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay, and the blockbuster everyone’s buzzing about — James Gunn’s fresh take on Superman.

Gunn’s Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn shared, “I wanted to tell the story about someone who was truly good in a world that doesn't value goodness, in a world that makes fun of basic kindness and basic human values.” That’s a pretty powerful premise for the next chapter in DC’s cinematic universe, and it might just be the only thing that can challenge the dinosaur juggernaut at the box office.

Universal Roars Louder Than Ever

Universal Studios is definitely the winner of the weekend, proving once again that franchises with built-in fanbases and epic scale can still crush the competition. Jurassic World Rebirth not only smashed opening weekend records but also gave audiences a reason to flock back to theaters.

Whether you’re into dinosaur mayhem, heartwarming dragon stories, or indie romance, the box office is serving up plenty of options right now. And with Superman on the horizon, the summer movie season is gearing up for a showdown that could reshape the landscape once more.
