Laura Loomer, the far-right social media provocateur known for stirring up controversy, has issued a legal threat against TV personality Bill Maher. The dust-up began after Maher made a provocative joke on his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, suggesting that Loomer and former President Donald Trump were involved in a romantic relationship.
During his Friday night broadcast, Maher set the stage for his quip by referencing Loomer's recent claims about a supposed "arranged relationship" between megastar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Loomer had alleged that this relationship was somehow intended to influence the 2024 presidential election.
Maher’s comedic jab followed, as he speculated about who the GOP nominee might be involved with. “He’s been a dog for too long and it’s not Melania,” Maher said. “I think we may have had our answer this week. And it’s a full-blown LIE and incredibly disrespectful to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.” Loomer didn’t stop there; she also criticized other conservatives for not coming to her defense. “Don’t think I’m not taking note of which conservatives are sitting back doing nothing as these egregious lies and disgusting malicious things are being said about me by Bill Maher and the state-sponsored fake news media networks,” she added in another post.

This week, she became a focal point after promoting a baseless claim that Haitian immigrants in an Ohio town were eating the community’s pet dogs and cats. This falsehood was later echoed by Trump during a September 10 debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
In addition to her inflammatory claims, Loomer was in the spotlight as she accompanied Trump to the debate in Philadelphia and then to New York City for the September 11 observances marking the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Her proximity to Trump has raised eyebrows among his Republican allies, including U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who have voiced concerns about her influence and closeness to the former president.
On Friday, Trump addressed the situation in a statement on Truth Social, distancing himself from Loomer. He clarified that she is not affiliated with his presidential campaign, describing her instead as a “private citizen and longtime supporter.” Trump also mentioned that he “disagreed with the statements she made” but chose not to elaborate further on the specifics.
