Recently, while doing press for the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine movie in New York City, I had the chance to chat with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Naturally, I couldn’t resist asking about the future of Spider-Man, specifically whether Jon Watts would continue directing the franchise. Feige’s response to CinemaBlend was quite revealing:
"We love Jon. Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us. He's got lots of things going on now. So we'll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he's busy."
Jon Watts has been the guiding force behind all three MCU Spider-Man films, starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, his schedule is packed. He’s got a movie coming out later this year called Wolfs, featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt as competing “clean up” men. The trailer alone promises a fun ride with two charismatic leads. After Wolfs, Watts is stepping into the Star Wars universe, directing episodes of the upcoming Disney+ series Skeleton Crew. This series is intriguing, introducing Jude Law to the Star Wars galaxy and focusing on kids on an adventure.
With Jon Watts committed to these exciting projects, it looks like he won’t be available to direct Spider-Man 4. This has fueled a lot of speculation about who might take over the helm.
