Ryan Gosling, at 43, showcased his multifaceted talent at the Academy Awards with a dynamic live rendition of "I'm Just Ken" from the film "Barbie." The performance was a vibrant spectacle, featuring Gosling in a striking pink suit, accompanied by a troupe of dancers in cowboy hats, including actors from the movie who portrayed Kens, such as Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Ncuti Gatwa.
Beginning his act from the audience area, Gosling made his way onto the stage, where he joined the dancers on a set of bright pink stairs. The dancers creatively carried him around amidst cardboard cutouts of a Barbie doll, creating a visually captivating performance. Adding to the excitement, iconic guitarist Slash joined in, further elevating the musical experience.
Returning to the audience, Gosling was joined by Greta Gerwig, America Ferrera, Margot Robbie, and Emma Stone, where they all enthusiastically sang along to the song's lyrics displayed on screens in the auditorium. "I'm Just Ken" was one of two songs from "Barbie" nominated for Best Original Song, with Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" ultimately winning the Oscar.
Despite initial uncertainty, Gosling delivered a memorable live performance, contrasting with his past decision not to perform "City of Stars" from "La La Land" at the Oscars. Eilish also performed her song from "Barbie" at the awards, accompanied by her brother, Finneas, on the piano. Mark Ronson, the co-writer of "I'm Just Ken," shared that the song was almost cut from the film but was successfully fought for by Gerwig, highlighting its significance in the movie's narrative.
Before his singing success, Gosling was part of the rock duo Dead Man's Bones and initially gained recognition from his early days on "The Mickey Mouse Club." His recent performance at the Oscars not only showcased his acting prowess but also reaffirmed his musical talent, underscoring his versatility as an artist.
