Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About SNL's Brutal Comedy Tradition

Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about her unnerving experience whenever her husband Colin Jost and Michael Che engage in their infamous tradition on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update." Speaking candidly on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Johansson revealed how brutal and anxiety-inducing it can be when Jost and Che exchange offensive jokes for each other to deliver live on air without prior knowledge.

"We need to go into witness protection after that night. Like, I am absolutely terrified we're gonna be targeted. It's so bad," Johansson admitted, reflecting on the nerve-wracking moments. "I black out for that period of the night. I actually don't remember it."

Host Kelly Clarkson chimed in, noting how Johansson herself becomes a target of these jokes, as seen in a recent SNL episode during the season 49 finale. One such joke, penned by Che for Jost to deliver, touched on Scarlett Johansson's AI character in the movie Her: "ChatGBT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson's AI character in Her," Jost read aloud, prompting Johansson's vivid reaction. "As soon as the picture came up, I was like [screams]," Johansson recounted, half-humored and half-distressed. "It is brutal. It is brutal. I feel like every year it gets worse. It's just terrible."

Reflecting on the intensity of the moment, Johansson emphasized how the experience often leaves her mentally blank. "I mean, I really do, I actually don't remember that segment. I fully blacked out. And they do it at Christmas, too. It's like a little gift to each other," she explained, highlighting the recurring nature of the ordeal.

Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, who exchanged vows in October 2020 and welcomed a son together, have also found themselves in the comedy crosshairs of SNL's festive specials. Johansson, who also shares a daughter with ex-husband Romain Dauriac, navigates these comedic jabs with a mix of dread and humor, making their marital dynamics a blend of public spectacle and private resilience.
