Scott Foley’s Shocking Return in Scream 7—How Is This Even Possible?

Written by Published

Scott Foley is back in the Scream franchise, and if you’re scratching your head trying to figure out how that’s possible—well, you’re not alone. Foley himself is just as confused!

The 52-year-old actor, known for his chilling turn as Roman Bridger in Scream 3, recently appeared on Good Morning America to promote his role in Will Trent. But of course, the conversation quickly veered toward his shocking return in Scream 7. For those keeping track, Roman was the mastermind behind the Ghostface killings in the 2000 sequel—and, as horror fans will remember, he was definitely killed off. So how is he coming back? Even Foley doesn’t have a clue!

A Mind-Bending Return to Scream

"I'm willing to take a poll here, and someone can explain it to me because I don't know how it works out," Foley joked during his GMA appearance. "Yeah, my character—spoiler alert—25 years ago, I was the killer in Scream 3. He was brutally taken to town and killed. Now I'm back in Scream 7, and I'm not sure how it's going to work."

But that’s Scream for you! If there’s one thing this franchise is known for, it’s keeping audiences guessing. And Foley isn’t the only supposedly dead character making a return—David Arquette and Matthew Lillard, both of whom met grim fates in earlier installments, are also back. The mystery surrounding their comebacks is fueling wild fan theories, and the hype for Scream 7 is already through the roof!

The Ultimate Reunion

One of the biggest draws of Scream 7 is the reunion of legacy cast members. Foley couldn’t contain his excitement about reuniting with some of his former co-stars, including Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox.

"The best, it's so much fun. I got to see Neve again and David Arquette again, and Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first one," Foley shared. "I was in Dawson's Creek, which was the first TV show he did years ago. He's directing this one, and we had so much fun being on set. It was great to be around people you love and know."

Fans will also be thrilled to know that other franchise favorites—Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and the unmistakable voice of Ghostface, Roger L. Jackson—are all returning. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Scream 7 is bringing in some fresh faces too. Joel McHale, Anna Camp, and TV personality Mark Consuelos have all joined the cast in mysterious new roles.

A Franchise That Keeps on Thrilling

One thing’s for sure: Scream 7 isn’t going to be predictable. Mason Gooding, who starred in Scream 5 and Scream 6, hinted at just how unexpected things are going to get.

"Matthew Lillard's been a huge part of my understanding and love for the medium for a very long time," Gooding told Entertainment Weekly. "When you consider his work in the context of [the first] Scream, you realize that was actually him kind of reigning it in and being more grounded given the circumstances. To see where they're taking that understanding and dynamic in 7 is far different than I imagine anyone will be able to anticipate, and they will absolutely deliver."

Speaking of Foley’s return, Gooding didn’t hold back his excitement either.

"He's incredible," Gooding said. "Scream 3 is a secret pleasure of mine. I cannot wait for people to see what they're cooking, so to speak, with Matthew and Scott because it's something special."

Behind the Scenes Drama

Of course, the making of Scream 7 hasn’t been without its share of controversy. The film is moving forward amid the highly publicized departures of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who led Scream 5 and Scream 6. Barrera was fired from the franchise over comments she made regarding the Israel-Hamas war, while Ortega left due to a reported scheduling conflict with Wednesday season 2.

Despite these shake-ups, Scream 7 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated horror films of the decade. With legacy characters making an impossible return and new cast members adding to the mystery, fans can expect a wild ride when the movie hits theaters on February 27, 2026.

Stay Tuned!

Horror fans, get ready! The countdown to Scream 7 is officially on, and if history has taught us anything, it’s that this franchise always finds a way to shock us. How will they explain the return of Foley, Lillard, and Arquette? Will Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott finally get the closure she deserves? And who will be the next Ghostface?

Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—this is one Scream movie you won’t want to miss!
