It’s been two years since The Boyz, the sensational 11-member K-pop group, graced the U.S. with their electrifying performances. Their return is nothing short of a big deal, and the excitement in the air is absolutely tangible.
Kevin, 26, radiates enthusiasm as he chats with USA TODAY backstage at Radio City Music Hall on July 19. "We’re feeling amazing,” he shares, his energy reflecting the thrill of reuniting with fans. “We missed out on North America last year, but we’re thrilled to be back this year.”
For Eric, this tour is particularly special. The 23-year-old hails from Los Angeles but was unable to join The Boyz on their 2022 U.S. tour due to a health hiatus. So, “ZENERATION II” is his debut tour in his home country.
“It feels surreal, like I’m living in a dream,” Eric admits, his excitement palpable.
On the day of the interview, the tour is kicking off, and the atmosphere is buzzing. The Boyz had just touched down in New York City the day before, so they’re still adjusting to the time zone. Their latest Japanese album, “Gibberish,” also dropped that morning, adding to the buzz.
Jacob, 27, reflects on the new release with enthusiasm. “I feel like ‘Gibberish’ brings a fresh concept for us. It’s something we haven’t explored this deeply before.”
One thing is clear from the backstage energy—The Boyz are beyond eager to hit the stage and connect with their beloved fans, affectionately known as The B.
A Sneak Peek into the ‘ZENERATION II’ Tour
The Boyz are set to dazzle fans across the U.S. with five stops on the “ZENERATION II” tour, concluding in San Jose, California on July 28. Since their debut tour, the group has clearly leveled up. Not only have the venues grown, but the members have also honed their skills.
Eric notes the improvement: “All of us have really stepped up our game in live vocals and rapping. Fans have definitely noticed the difference.” This enhanced performance level has only fueled the excitement for both The Boyz and their fans.
A major highlight of this tour is the revamped setlist. Juyeon describes it as “unique,” teasing fans with unexpected song choices and nostalgic throwbacks. “We dug deep into our catalog for this tour,” Juyeon says, “and we hope both long-time fans and new followers will enjoy it.”
The tour kicks off with “Diamond Life” from the “BE AWAKE” album, a track that the group feels is perfect for opening the show. “Since that album came out, we always thought it would be great as a concert opener,” Kevin reveals. “And now, it’s finally happening!”
Fans can also look forward to a special treat: “Bite Back,” an unreleased track from their upcoming album. Jacob excitedly shares, “It’s our first time showcasing an unreleased song with a dance routine. We worked really hard on it, and I think fans will love it.”
The Daily Grind of Touring
Touring is a whirlwind of activity for The Boyz, but they do make an effort to enjoy their time in each city. On the first day of the tour, Eric started his morning with a coffee and sandwich, followed by a leisurely walk. “We had a space booked to finalize details before heading to the venue for hair, makeup, and rehearsals,” he explains.
Despite their hectic schedule, the members carve out moments to explore. Juyeon, for instance, likes to take advantage of his free time by shopping and soaking in the local sights. “Even on show days, I try to enjoy the city I’m in,” he says.
In New York, the group explored various spots. Sangyeon visited Little Island in Hudson River Park, while the group as a whole indulged in some shopping in SoHo. “Afterward, we headed to Times Square and enjoyed a nice dinner,” Eric adds.
Staying fit is crucial during tour, and some members hit the gym post-show. Eric, in particular, values his workout sessions. “It helps us stay pumped up,” he says. For winding down, the routine varies: Kevin prefers warm baths followed by a cold shower to rejuvenate his muscles, while Eric often requests hot, spicy ramen for a post-concert meal. Juyeon opts for burgers, pizza, or Korean dishes like kimchi jjigae or bibimbap.
The Joy of Performing
Performing is at the heart of what The Boyz do, and each member expresses their passion for it. Kevin reflects on how live performances fulfill his dreams. “I started my career watching live shows, and now being on stage feels like living that dream,” he says.
Eric finds motivation in the global support from fans. “Seeing fans from all over the world cheering us on makes me work harder as an artist,” he says. Jacob emphasizes the special connection formed with fans during concerts. “We want to be a safe space for our fans, just as they are for us,” he says.
Sangyeon, 27, underscores the importance of bringing energy and powerful performances. “We want our fans to leave feeling the energy we give on stage,” he says. “We aim to make each moment on tour precious and memorable.”
A Touch of Personal Flair
Kevin’s pre-show ritual includes listening to Beyoncé’s “Renaissance.” “For ‘ZENERATION,’ I set a timer to listen to the whole album before hitting the stage,” he reveals. “It’s a masterpiece, and I can’t just pick one song.”
Touring might be demanding, but The Boyz are embracing every moment with enthusiasm and dedication. Their journey through the U.S. is more than just a series of concerts; it’s an adventure that combines hard work, passion, and a genuine connection with their fans.
