The identity of the Front Man, the chilling villain from Squid Game, was a major mystery throughout the first season of the series. But, just as fans thought they’d uncovered all there was to know, the show’s second season promises to reveal even more, diving deep into his backstory and unmasking the complexity behind his character. The twisted mastermind, whose real name is In-ho, is set to become even more multi-dimensional in this next chapter of the game, which is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26.
Lee Byung-hun, the actor who portrays the Front Man, shared some intriguing insights about his role and the evolution of his character in an interview with NBC News. According to Lee, the Front Man is far more complicated than viewers initially saw. In fact, In-ho’s painful past plays a crucial role in shaping the man he becomes. After suffering through the devastating loss of his wife and drowning in crippling medical debt, In-ho transforms into someone who sees the world through a very dark lens. His character becomes an extreme pessimist, struggling to find meaning in life after all that he’s been through.
For Lee, portraying this depth was vital. He explained, “As an actor, what was really most important to me was being able to tell the story of the Front Man’s past.” In-ho, as Lee described, is a character who has lost hope and is now firmly convinced that humanity is devoid of any redeeming qualities. This tragic arc gives fans a glimpse into the tortured psyche of the man who runs the deadly games, offering a chilling look into what could drive someone to orchestrate such horrors.
The upcoming season builds on the dramatic tension of the first. It follows Player 456, also known as Gi-hun, who, despite already having been crowned the winner of the games three years ago, decides to re-enter the competition. This time, however, Gi-hun’s motivations are different. He’s determined to put an end to the deadly contest and protect the innocent lives of the other participants. However, a shocking twist reveals that the Front Man, who is now running the games, is not only a former winner but has also disguised himself as Player 001, blending in with the contestants while secretly manipulating the events behind the scenes.
In one particularly poignant scene, Player 001 shares a heartbreaking story with Gi-hun and the other players. He tells them about his wife, who is suffering from acute cirrhosis and in desperate need of a liver transplant. To make matters worse, she is also pregnant, and the doctor advised her to terminate the pregnancy for her health. Yet, she refuses. Player 001, in his desperation, explains how he borrowed money from everyone he could, but it wasn’t enough to save her. This moment reveals the intense personal struggle that pushed him to the edge.
Then, just when things seem hopeless, a supposed "old vendor" offers help. This vendor, though, was seen as trying to bribe him, which leads to his eventual firing from a job he had dedicated his entire youth to. Feeling cornered with no other options, Player 001’s descent into the game becomes his last hope, even if it means resorting to "blood money" to save his wife and child.
Lee Byung-hun reveals that this persona adopted by the Front Man—his cold, calculating identity—isn’t entirely fabricated. It’s actually rooted in the series of tragic events that led him to become the person he is. He explains, “The fake persona that he assumes in the game—it’s actually his own story.” The show takes a deep dive into how such a character can emerge, and this revelation promises to add more layers to the Front Man’s dark story. In a flashback, viewers also get a glimpse of his brother, Officer Jun-ho, who visits the grave of In-ho’s late wife, hinting at the deep personal loss that defines In-ho’s actions throughout the series.
Despite the somber, twisted nature of his character, Lee remains hopeful about the show’s message. He shared that even as the show explores dark themes like inequality and the loss of humanity, he himself continues to resist falling into despair. Lee remarked, “When we go through our daily lives, despite the many disappointments that we experience… what allows us to live day by day is that small slice of hope that we carry within us.” This sentiment echoes the deeper themes of Squid Game—even in the most extreme and distorted versions of reality, hope, however small, is what keeps people going. Lee adds, “‘Squid Game,’ while it is a very condensed version of the reality that we live in, it’s a very extreme version that reflects the dark side of the world.”
Squid Game took the world by storm with its first season, quickly becoming Netflix’s most-watched show of all time. The series racked up an incredible 1.65 billion hours streamed in its first four weeks alone after debuting in 2021. Its exploration of human nature, wealth inequality, and survival pushed viewers to examine their own values and the consequences of desperation. Now, with the second season approaching, anticipation has reached new heights, especially after the show received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama Series.
But the immense success of the first season also came with its own set of pressures. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk admitted that the responsibility of creating a worthy follow-up to such a global phenomenon was no easy task. “Because Season 1 was so globally loved, when it was decided that there was going to be a second season, it’s true that I felt a huge amount of pressure,” Hwang said. Many fans were quick to declare the first season "perfect" and questioned whether a second season was even necessary. “So many people out there were saying, ‘Season 1 was perfect. Why don’t you just end it with Season 1?’”
Despite the challenges, the team behind Squid Game remains committed to delivering an even more thrilling and intense continuation of the story. And with a complex new layer added to the Front Man’s character and a new sense of purpose driving Gi-hun, the second season promises to be just as gripping and unforgettable as the first. Will the darkness continue to consume the players, or will there be a glimmer of hope amidst the bloodshed? Fans will have to tune in to find out.
As the second season of Squid Game approaches, the stakes have never been higher, and the layers of its complex characters continue to unfold. With twists, revelations, and deeper explorations of loss and hope, the new season will be sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting what happens next in this deadly game of survival.
