Special counsel David Weiss has indicted Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI confidential source, on felony charges related to false statements and obstruction of justice. Smirnov allegedly provided false and derogatory information about President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, in 2020, after Biden became a presidential candidate. According to charging documents, Smirnov made false statements to the FBI and created a false record related to these statements. He had been considered a "highly credible FBI source" by Republicans and was previously used to support claims of corruption against Joe Biden. However, the FBI now describes him as a liar.
The allegations of Biden corruption first emerged nearly a year ago when Senator Chuck Grassley released unverified claims that the Biden family had received $10 million from a Ukrainian oligarch. These claims have been repeatedly cited by Republicans to justify an impeachment inquiry into the president. Despite Smirnov's charges, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated that the GOP impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden is not undermined. Comer maintained that the inquiry is based on a large record of evidence, including bank records and witness testimony.
Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, responded to Smirnov's charges, stating, "For months we have warned that Republicans have built their conspiracies about Hunter and his family on lies told by people with political agendas, not facts." Smirnov was arrested at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas after arriving from overseas. He faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison if convicted.
