Laura Loomer, a far-right activist known for her controversial and often inflammatory views, recently made headlines again, not just for her rhetoric, but for her apparent rising influence in former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign. While some have expressed support for her, many prominent figures, including members of Trump's own base, have criticized her recent statements and presence in Trump's circle.
Loomer has always been a polarizing figure. Proudly describing herself as an "Islamophobe," she's built her reputation on pushing conspiracy theories and making inflammatory remarks, particularly about marginalized groups. The latest wave of backlash against Loomer stems from her offensive comments about Vice President Kamala Harris. Loomer quipped that the White House "will smell like curry" and that its speeches would be "facilitated via a call center" if Harris, who has Indian heritage, were to win the presidency.
Many saw this comment as overtly racist and inflammatory, and it didn't go unnoticed. Among her critics are some surprising names—figures you wouldn't expect to see opposing Loomer, like Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Trump's most ardent supporters, and Senator JD Vance. Even Vance, who shares a similar political ideology with Loomer, distanced himself from her remarks. Vance, who is married to a woman of Indian descent, labeled Loomer’s comments as inappropriate and a distraction from the real issues facing the campaign. “What Laura said about Kamala Harris is not what we should be focused on,” Vance told NBC’s Meet the Press. "We should be focused on policy and the issues, not personal attacks."
Yet, despite the growing backlash from both political opponents and members of Trump's base, Loomer has remained defiant. Speaking on her podcast, Unleashed, she thanked those who have stood by her but also took aim at her critics. “You can’t control me. That’s why you hate me,” Loomer said in a recent episode, expressing her defiance against the accusations and criticisms hurled her way. “Some people liked [my joke], some people didn’t. I don’t care. I’m not a racist. I’m not a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. Say what you want about me, but it won’t stop me from exposing you,” she continued.
Loomer has had a long and complicated history with controversy. She was banned from platforms like Twitter (now X), Facebook, and Instagram for her inflammatory remarks. Loomer even managed to get herself banned from Uber and Lyft after making anti-Muslim comments about their drivers in 2017. These cancellations only seem to have fueled her sense of grievance. She’s consistently portrayed herself as a victim of cancel culture, which, in her mind, makes her even more dangerous to her critics. “You know what they say, the most dangerous person in the world is somebody who has nothing to lose anymore,” she said during her podcast.
But Loomer’s latest antics go beyond social media bans and inflammatory remarks. She was seen accompanying Trump on a flight to the ABC presidential debate, a move that raised many eyebrows. Despite Trump’s team distancing themselves from Loomer and stating that she does not have an official role in his campaign, it’s clear that she has some level of influence. Her presence at Trump’s side during high-profile events and her appearances with his entourage, such as at the 9/11 memorial events in New York and Pennsylvania, have fueled speculation about her closeness to the former president.
Interestingly, Loomer’s appearance at the 9/11 memorials came after she had previously suggested that the terrorist attacks were an "inside job." In a social media post on September 13, she questioned the official narrative of the attacks, stating that “23 years later, and there’s still a lot of unanswered questions.” She went on to claim that classified 9/11 documents withheld crucial information from the American people, adding, “The American people deserve to know the entire truth.”
Even though Loomer’s association with Trump has stirred controversy, the former president has been walking a tightrope when addressing her. Trump has both defended and distanced himself from Loomer, which creates a complex dynamic. While he’s publicly stated that he disagrees with some of her statements, he also praised her as a "free spirit" with strong opinions. Trump’s comments have sparked criticism, especially given Loomer’s role in suggesting that Trump should repeat the false claim that immigrants were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, during the ABC debate. In response to the growing criticism, Trump took to Truth Social, where he acknowledged her controversial remarks but pointed to the frustration felt by his supporters. He wrote, “I disagree with the statements she made, but like the many millions of people who support me, she is tired of watching the Radical Left Marxists and Fascists violently attack and smear me.”
Even with Trump's attempt to strike a balance, his association with Loomer has drawn heavy criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was quick to condemn Loomer’s rhetoric. “It is repugnant, these types of comments,” she said, referring to Loomer’s racist remarks about Harris. “It is un-American to say these things. No leader should ever associate with someone who spreads this kind of ugliness, this kind of racist poison.”
Jean-Pierre’s comments echoed sentiments from others, including Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, who went even further in his criticism of Loomer. Tillis took to Twitter to call her out directly, saying, “Laura Loomer is a crazy conspiracy theorist who regularly utters disgusting garbage intended to divide Republicans.”
Interestingly, Tillis suggested that Loomer’s actions were more harmful to Trump’s chances of winning re-election than any Democrat could be. “A DNC plant couldn’t do a better job than she is doing to hurt President Trump’s chances of winning re-election,” Tillis wrote, effectively accusing her of sabotaging the campaign from within.
Despite all the controversy swirling around her, Loomer seems unfazed. Whether it's the media, other Republicans, or even members of Trump’s inner circle calling her out, she seems to thrive on the attention. Her podcast and social media posts regularly feature defiant rants aimed at her critics, and it’s clear she has no intention of toning down her rhetoric anytime soon.
In a political climate as polarized as this one, figures like Laura Loomer thrive on pushing boundaries, testing the limits of free speech, and navigating the fine line between offensive commentary and political discourse. Whether she remains a significant figure in Trump’s orbit as his 2024 campaign progresses, or whether her incendiary views ultimately backfire and cost him support, remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though—Laura Loomer isn’t going away quietly, and her controversial presence will likely continue to fuel debates about the direction of the Republican Party in the years to come.
