Sean “Diddy” Combs is once again facing a legal setback in New York City as he was denied bail for the second time in his ongoing sex trafficking case. On Wednesday, a federal judge made the decision to keep Combs behind bars, rejecting an appeal from his legal team.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter Jr. delivered a stern verdict during the bail hearing, stating that the evidence presented by the prosecution was "clear and convincing" enough to warrant keeping Combs detained. The judge emphasized that no set of conditions could ensure the safety of the community or prevent Combs from potentially tampering with witnesses if he were released.
Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, spoke to reporters after the hearing, expressing frustration with the slow pace of the case. He emphasized his desire to expedite the trial process. “I understand the government has a lot of electronic devices they need to sift through, but everything seems to be on their schedule,” Agnifilo remarked. “We’re ready to move forward and are pushing for a swift trial to clear this up.”
Adding to the gravity of the situation, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams revealed earlier this week that federal agents had seized devices from Combs’ properties that allegedly contained disturbing images and videos related to the charges against him. This evidence is a critical piece of the prosecution's case.
The legal drama took a significant turn on Tuesday when U.S. Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky sided with prosecutors, denying bail and keeping Combs in custody. During the court appearance, Combs was formally charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. In a dramatic moment, Combs entered a not guilty plea to all the charges in a packed lower Manhattan courtroom.
Currently, Combs is being held at a detention center across the East River in Brooklyn. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the conditions there are reportedly harsh. Agnifilo conveyed the difficulties of preparing for a trial from such a facility. “It’s a very tough environment for him to be in,” he told CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan before the hearing. “It’s nearly impossible to prepare for a trial from where he is.”
Prosecutors have painted Combs as a significant flight risk and a potential threat to community safety. They argued in a letter to Judge Tarnofsky that releasing him could pose serious risks. Agnifilo has vehemently denied these allegations, promising a vigorous defense. “We’re committed to fighting these charges with everything we’ve got,” he assured. “Sean is determined to prove his innocence.”
The charges against Combs are particularly shocking. Prosecutors accuse him of using his influential business empire to mask his alleged criminal activities. They allege that Combs hosted events, dubbed “Freak Offs,” where he engaged in egregious acts of abuse. These gatherings, according to the prosecution, involved commercial sex workers, narcotics such as ketamine, ecstasy, and GHB, which were allegedly used to keep the victims compliant.
Adding to the case's complexity, federal authorities had previously raided Combs’ residences in Los Angeles and Miami earlier this year. During these raids, they discovered defaced AR-15 rifles and a large-capacity drum magazine. Prosecutors argue that these weapons were used to intimidate and threaten victims and witnesses.
The indictment also brings up a troubling incident from 2016, captured on hotel security cameras. The footage, which CNN aired earlier this year, appears to show Combs assaulting his former girlfriend, the singer Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. In response to the footage, Combs issued an apology in May, describing his behavior as “inexcusable” and accepting full responsibility for his actions.
Compounding the drama, in November, Cassie, legally known as Casandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit against Combs, accusing him of rape and abuse during their relationship. While Combs denied the allegations, a settlement was reached the following day.
The case against Sean Combs is far from over, and with each development, the stakes continue to rise. The legal battles ahead are likely to be intense, with both sides preparing for what promises to be a high-profile and closely watched trial.
