As President Trump prepares to address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, the nation eagerly awaits insights into his leadership on some of the most pressing issues facing the country. Fox News Digital spoke with two political analysts—Rob Bluey, president and executive editor of the Daily Signal, and Julian Epstein, a longtime Democratic strategist and former chief counsel to the House Judiciary Committee—to assess Trump’s performance across key policy areas. They graded his effectiveness, ranging from A to F, based on his administration's actions and public sentiment.
Border Security: A Strong Stance
One of the standout aspects of Trump’s presidency has been his firm stance on border security. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan have played pivotal roles in implementing policies that have led to a record-low number of illegal crossings at the southern border. "Their work is paying off," Bluey remarked. "With increased enforcement and the looming threat of deportation, President Trump is delivering on his promise to curb illegal immigration. However, he still needs additional resources from Congress to fully secure the border."
Epstein echoed this sentiment, awarding Trump an "A" on border security. "Promises made, promises kept," he said. "The public overwhelmingly supports these efforts, especially given the alternative approach under Biden, which many view as too lenient."
Foreign Policy: Complex Challenges
Trump has positioned himself as a leader who can navigate global conflicts with efficiency. He famously claimed he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours, but recent diplomatic hurdles—particularly Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s stringent demands—have made this goal more challenging. Bluey graded Trump’s foreign policy performance a "B," noting that "while progress has been made, the recent Oval Office confrontation with Zelenskyy highlights the complexities of international diplomacy."
In the Middle East, Trump aims to replicate the success of the Abraham Accords and has set a firm ultimatum for Hamas to release hostages. However, with around 59 hostages still in captivity, achieving a final resolution remains difficult.
Epstein also assigned a "B" grade, criticizing the Zelenskyy press conference meltdown as a misstep on the global stage. "Rule #1 in diplomacy: Get your act together before going public," he stated. However, he acknowledged that Trump’s strategic maneuvering has outpaced Biden’s foreign policy approach, which he compared to "playing checkers against Trump’s three-dimensional chess."
Culture Wars: DEI and Transgender Policies
One of the most defining elements of Trump’s presidency has been his approach to cultural issues. From dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government to signing an executive order banning biological males from competing in women’s sports, Trump has made clear his stance against progressive cultural policies.
Bluey awarded him an "A+" for these efforts, praising his decisive action in eliminating what he called "Marxist ideas" from government institutions. "His confrontation with Maine Gov. Janet Mills on the issue signals that he’s serious about enforcement," Bluey said.
Epstein also acknowledged the overwhelming public support for these measures, giving Trump an "A." "Americans never wanted the radical cultural revolution the far left attempted to impose," he said. "Trump has a supermajority backing him on this."
The Economy: Tackling Inflation and Budget Concerns
Economic concerns remain at the forefront of public discourse, with inflation being a persistent challenge. Trump has placed much of the blame on Biden’s spending policies, arguing that the previous administration’s financial missteps caused the economic instability. While he has taken steps to reduce regulatory burdens and provide tax relief, the cost of living remains a critical concern for voters.
Bluey graded Trump’s economic policies a "B," noting that "while he has acknowledged the challenges of curbing inflation, immediate results remain to be seen." Additionally, the recent bird flu outbreak affecting egg prices has added another layer of economic pressure.
Epstein concurred with the "B" rating but emphasized the need for quicker action. "Biden’s biggest economic mistake was ignoring inflation, but Trump hasn’t done much to tackle it in his first month back. This needs to change," he said.
Budget Deficit and Spending Cuts: The DOGE Initiative
In a surprising yet significant development, Elon Musk and the DOGE team have been working closely with the administration to identify and eliminate wasteful government spending. So far, they have discovered $65 billion in potential savings—a step toward their ambitious goal of cutting $1 trillion in unnecessary expenditures.
"For the first time in years, there’s a serious effort to hold federal agencies accountable for spending," Bluey remarked, assigning Trump an "A" in this area. "Musk’s determination to reduce the budget deficit shows no signs of slowing down, especially given rising public support for fiscal responsibility."
Epstein, however, issued a "B+" grade, warning that while spending cuts are necessary, they should be executed carefully. "Trump and his team must ensure they don’t cut vital programs like cancer research in their rush to trim the fat from bureaucracy," he cautioned.
Looking Ahead: Trump’s Address to Congress
With these critical issues in focus, Trump’s address to Congress is expected to highlight his administration’s achievements while laying out plans for the future. Given his track record, supporters anticipate a bold and confident speech that will reaffirm his commitment to policies that have resonated with much of the American public.
