Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley scored a significant victory in Vermont's Republican presidential primary, defeating former President Donald Trump. On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden secured a win over challengers Marianne Williamson and Rep. Dean Phillips for the state’s 16 delegates.
Haley's win marked her first victory in a state primary, with Vermonters opting against Trump's nomination. Governor Phil Scott, a prominent supporter of Haley, urged voters from all political backgrounds to support her, highlighting the state's open primary system.
Biden easily won the Democratic primary, with the Associated Press calling the race soon after polls closed. Despite facing minimal competition, he secured an overwhelming majority of votes, with inflation, immigration, and the future of American democracy being key issues for voters.
Vermonters like Marley Beers and Art Shields, typically aligned with Democratic policies, chose to vote in the Republican primary to prevent an easy path for Trump. Some voters, however, supported Trump due to concerns about the economy and immigration.
Stephanie Figueiredo, who voted for Biden in the previous election, switched to Trump, citing his strict immigration policies and belief that he would support regular citizens. Meanwhile, supporters of Biden highlighted their desire to keep Trump out of office and their satisfaction with Biden's actions as president so far.
