Azeez Al-Shaair’s journey in Houston has been nothing short of electrifying. Just four months into his time with the Texans, this undrafted gem from Florida Atlantic has transformed into a key player on their defense, taking the reins with impressive authority.
When Al-Shaair first hit the NFL scene back in 2019, he wasn’t drafted. But that didn’t hold him back. After a standout season with a staggering 163 tackles—placing him in the top five for the league—Al-Shaair proved his worth. The 2023 season marked a new chapter as he ventured away from the familiar guidance of Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, his former defensive coordinator from San Francisco.
Initially, Al-Shaair's move wasn’t part of the grand plan. He had envisioned following Ryans to Houston, but fate had other ideas. Instead, he took a leap of faith, betting on his own abilities. He signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, hoping to secure a more lucrative contract the following offseason.
Watching from Nashville, Al-Shaair saw the Texans undergo a remarkable transformation, clinching a playoff spot and securing a division title, breaking a dry spell that had lasted since 2019. Meanwhile, his former team swept him in their two games, showcasing the impressive turnaround.
With Blake Cashman’s departure in free agency, Al-Shaair’s return to Houston became a top priority for the Texans. This time, the team was ready to offer him a more enticing three-year deal. “He showed he was capable of running the show,” Ryans said, highlighting Al-Shaair's significant impact.

After a practice, Pitre recounted how Al-Shaair corrected him on a quick check he’d made. “I think that leadership and accountability will do nothing but uplift this team,” Pitre remarked.
Al-Shaair and Ryans share more similarities than just a coaching connection. Ryans, known for his “Cap” reputation, led Houston’s defense with integrity and excellence, contributing to the team’s first postseason appearance under Gary Kubiak. The hope in Houston is that Al-Shaair can channel a similar influence, especially as the Texans aim to enhance their performance.
Despite a commendable defensive showing in the previous season, where they ranked 11th in points allowed per game (20.8), the Texans struggled with passing yards, landing in the bottom 10. Ryans acknowledges Al-Shaair’s value in addressing these areas. “Adding Azeez to our team has been really valuable because of his experience, the way he communicates, and the leadership he brings when it comes to bringing guys together,” he noted.
