The Stars came into their series against Vegas saying last season and the regular season didn't matter. They hadn't faced off since December 9th, way before the trade deadline. But now, after falling 0-2 in the series and losing six straight to the Golden Knights, it's starting to feel like maybe Vegas just has their number.
Coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged Vegas's prowess, calling them the Stanley Cup champions who seem to have everyone figured out, not just the Stars. Historically, the Stars have struggled against the Golden Knights, with just six wins in 17 games, making it their second toughest matchup after the Boston Bruins.
This season, Dallas couldn't beat only five teams, and they played Vegas three times, one of those ending in a heartbreaking loss with just over a minute remaining. Despite this, the games have been close, with two going into overtime and the others decided by just one goal.
Seguin suggested that last year's emotions might be affecting them, leading to a more physical game on Wednesday, with the Stars delivering a whopping 53 hits compared to their average of 17.8. They've also had the edge in 5-on-5 play, but Vegas has been capitalizing on their chances.
DeBoer noted that despite the even play, Vegas has been able to dominate defensively, limiting the Stars to just five shots on goal in each of the last two periods of their last game. Vegas's ability to capitalize on opportunities, like a rush goal from Eichel to Marchessault, has been key.
However, Dallas has its strengths, especially on special teams, with a top power play and penalty kill in the regular season. They've also got a solid goaltender in Oettinger, who made 23 saves in their last game. Despite having one of the best offenses in the league, scoring has been a challenge, with just three players finding the back of the net in the playoffs.
With the series hanging in the balance, the Stars know they need to respond quickly. Seguin emphasized their resilience, noting that they haven't lost many games in a row all season, and they'll start with winning one against Vegas.
