Last October, during the Charlotte Hornets' Purple and Teal Day event, things took a sour turn for Angell Joseph and his family. They claim that as the crowd swarmed the players for autographs, LaMelo Ball, one of Angell's idols, accidentally ran over Angell's foot while driving away. It wasn't just a minor incident; Angell ended up with a broken foot, leaving his family with hefty medical bills.
Tamaria McRae, Angell's mother, vividly recalls the moment when she saw her son go down. She thought he had dropped something, but it turned out to be much worse. Ball had unwittingly driven over Angell's foot, causing the injury. McRae shared her distressing experience with WSOC-TV 9 in Charlotte, highlighting the emotional toll it took on Angell, who was not just physically hurt but also emotionally affected by the incident.
The family's attorney, Cameron DeBrun, expressed frustration over the lack of recourse. Because Ball wasn't specifically named in the police report, they couldn't seek compensation through his insurance. This left them with no option but to take legal action. Adding to the complexity, the Hornets organization was included in the lawsuit due to the event being an official team function.
As of now, neither Ball nor the Hornets have commented publicly on the lawsuit. It's a tough situation for everyone involved, with Angell's family seeking justice and accountability for what they see as a preventable accident.
Despite the legal proceedings being in their early stages, there's hope for a resolution that satisfies all parties involved. Many cases like this end up being settled out of court, sparing everyone the stress of a trial. While the road ahead may seem uncertain, there's optimism that Angell's family will find closure and compensation for the ordeal they've endured.
