Sam Williams’ Season Ends Before It Begins: What’s Next for the Cowboys' Defensive Line
The Dallas Cowboys were gearing up for a pivotal season with Sam Williams poised to play a key role on their defensive line. Unfortunately, just as the foundation of his career seemed to be solidifying, it was yanked out from under him. Williams, expected to start at defensive end opposite DeMarcus Lawrence, has been sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a torn ACL in his left knee. This injury, which occurred during a special teams drill early in Sunday’s practice, is a major setback for the third-year player and a significant blow to the Cowboys’ defensive strategy.
A Devastating Blow
The injury occurred abruptly. Williams went down during a routine drill and lay on the field for an extended period as the team’s medical staff tended to him. He was eventually carted off the field, and the concern was palpable. Quarterback Dak Prescott, showing his support, offered a comforting pat on Williams' shoulder as he was driven away. This moment underscored the gravity of the situation.
Club officials, already on edge, feared the worst. An MRI later confirmed that Williams’ season was over. This was particularly tough news for the Cowboys, who had high hopes for Williams as a burgeoning star in their defensive lineup.
Williams' Rising Status and Impact
Williams was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2022 draft and had been steadily climbing the ranks. The departure of veterans Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler, who combined for 11.5 sacks and 56 quarterback pressures last season, had elevated Williams' status. The team’s decision to let Armstrong and Fowler walk was based on their belief that Williams was ready to step up.
Williams had shown promise, finishing third on the team with 4.5 sacks last season. Despite his growing potential, he only managed 17 quarterback pressures, which did not place him among the top five on the team. He was on the field for 303 defensive snaps, a modest increase from his rookie season but still less than expected for someone the coaching staff had high hopes for. Notably, he only played eight snaps in the playoff loss to Green Bay, which was a stark reminder of his limited role in high-stakes games.
The Lost Opportunity
During the off-season, Williams had expressed how crucial this season was for his career. “I feel like this season will be the foundation of my career, basically,” he shared in May. “How it goes is how it goes. I feel I will get more opportunity to show what kind of player I am and to extend my market.” His injury means missing out on this vital opportunity and the chance to prove himself as a key player for the Cowboys.
Who’s Next? Marshawn Kneeland Steps Up
With Williams out, all eyes are now on Marshawn Kneeland, the second-round pick out of Western Michigan. Kneeland was already expected to be part of the defensive rotation and eventually replace Lawrence when he retires. The injury to Williams accelerates Kneeland’s opportunity to make a significant impact.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy had praised Kneeland’s performance before Williams' injury. “Impressive,” McCarthy said. “Very impressive. Very mature. I so love his physicality, motor, just like we did during the draft process. He’s off to a good start. He’s very comfortable, picks it up in the classroom. Outward personality, which is important. He’s off to a good start.”
Kneeland’s teammates have also noticed his potential. Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa described him as “athletic” and “explosive,” emphasizing how well Kneeland takes instructions and his evident hunger to succeed. “I can just tell,” Odighizuwa added, highlighting Kneeland’s readiness to step into a larger role.
Rounding Out the Defensive Line
With Williams out, the Cowboys will need to rely on other defensive ends on the roster. Chauncey Golston, Viliami Fehoko, Tyrus Wheat, and Durrell Johnson are all options who will need to step up in Williams' absence. These players will be critical in filling the void left by Williams and maintaining the defensive line’s effectiveness.
Additionally, the Cowboys may look to address the defensive end position through external additions. The coaching staff and management will likely explore trade options or free-agent signings to bolster their lineup and ensure they have the depth needed to compete effectively throughout the season.
The Road Ahead
The injury to Sam Williams is undeniably a significant setback for the Cowboys, impacting their defensive plans and leaving a gap that will need to be filled by emerging talent and existing roster members. As the team adjusts to this new reality, the focus will shift to how well Marshawn Kneeland and the other defensive ends can rise to the occasion.
For fans and analysts, this season will be one of watching how the Cowboys adapt and whether they can maintain their defensive prowess despite the loss of one of their promising young players. The challenge ahead will test the team’s depth, resilience, and ability to execute their defensive strategies effectively.
