Donovan Mitchell is playing it cool as speculation swirls around his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After being sidelined with a calf strain during the playoffs, which saw his team ousted by the Boston Celtics, the spotlight is on what Mitchell will decide next.
With one year left on his contract at $35.4 million, the Cavaliers are gearing up to offer him a four-year, $208.5 million extension this summer. His decision to sign—or not—will significantly impact the team's direction. If he opts not to extend, the Cavs might have to consider trading him to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer of 2025.
Mitchell, speaking to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, continued his trend of praising Cleveland without committing to a long-term stay (hat tip to Real GM). He also refuted claims that he was frustrated with his teammates during the season.
"I reached out to Donovan Mitchell today, and he was emphatic in telling me that he is not disgruntled with anyone or anything in Cleveland. In fact, he said to me, 'I am happy in Cleveland. I've been happy since I arrived in Cleveland.' He thinks this team has made progress this season... But as he said, he's not in this to go to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs," Wojnarowski reported.
Mitchell acknowledged the looming decision about his future: "I know I've got a decision to make this offseason. My agent and I will talk to Cleveland about that at the right time." He emphasized, "I'm not leaving this season unhappy. I'm leaving it more determined."
Changes are definitely brewing in Cleveland, driven by Mitchell’s impending choice. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff's position is precarious. Depending on Mitchell's decision, guard Darius Garland might find himself on the trade block. The Cavs had more success with a single center this season, enhancing shooting and spacing around Mitchell and Garland, which could make Jarrett Allen a trade candidate. It’s shaping up to be an exciting offseason for the Cavaliers.
Mitchell’s decision is the linchpin. Despite the management's confidence in re-signing him, Mitchell’s words remain non-committal. This offseason could redefine Cleveland's future in a big way.
