It's more than just a change of scenery for Mixon; it's about finding the perfect fit both on and off the field. Recently, the new Texans running back shared his excitement as he sported the team's fresh home uniform for the first time during a photo shoot for some upcoming promotions. Despite his move from Cincinnati, Mixon remains loyal to his number 28, a jersey he's proudly worn since his NFL debut in 2017. Drafted in the second round out of Oklahoma, Mixon is set to play a pivotal role in Houston's offense well into the foreseeable future. The Texans made a strategic move earlier this offseason by trading a seventh-round pick in 2024 to the Bengals to secure the former Pro Bowler, promptly sealing the deal with a lucrative three-year, $27 million extension.
Approaching his 28th birthday this month, Mixon shows no signs of slowing down. Last season, he achieved his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season, averaging over 4.0 yards per carry. His versatility extends beyond rushing, as evidenced by his 52 receptions and three touchdowns, making him a valuable asset in the passing game as well. The acquisition of Mixon underscores Houston's commitment to bolstering their ground game, a move lauded by former linebacker turned coach, DeMeco Ryans, who emphasized Mixon's impact as a game-changing playmaker.
"Throughout his career, he's been a model of consistency—a player who consistently moves the chains and creates opportunities in the passing game," Ryans commented before the draft. "He's the type of player who elevates our offensive capabilities."
Since arriving in Houston, Mixon has already made a strong impression on his teammates and coaching staff alike, showcasing his adaptability and skill set.
"No matter the type of run scheme, Joe's versatility shines through. He's adept at zone schemes, gap schemes, and excels as a receiver out of the backfield," observed Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.
With his impressive track record that includes ranking seventh among active running backs in career touchdowns with 49, Mixon eagerly anticipates reuniting with teammates like C.J. Stroud and Stefon Diggs as the Texans gear up for training camp at NRG Stadium starting July 18th.
