Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and country music star Parker McCollum have both had an unforgettable year. Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, delivered one of the most impressive rookie seasons ever, leading the Texans to the playoffs for the first time in four years. Meanwhile, McCollum, a native of Conroe just outside Houston, solidified his status as a rising star in country music with his hit single "Burn It Down."
During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, McCollum took a playful jab at the Indianapolis Colts and their former punter's allegiance to the Midwest team while also sharing his enthusiasm for the upcoming football season. McCollum believes Houston's moment has finally arrived with Stroud at the helm. "It's special, dude, I get emotional talking about it," McCollum said. "I've loved that football team for so long, and now we're really good... we're about to talk some smack. That's two-thirds of my life, and we didn't have a team when I was a kid. Then, for 20 years, we were alright at times, but now we're special."
This newfound success stems from a solid foundation. Former Pro Bowl linebacker and 2006 Defensive Rookie of the Year DeMeco Ryans returned to Houston after over a decade, this time as head coach. The Texans also made significant investments in their roster by drafting Stroud, a two-time Heisman finalist from Ohio State, and defensive end Will Anderson Jr., a two-time Bronko Nagurski winner from Alabama. McCollum sees the coach as the cornerstone of this transformation. "He's the secret sauce, dude. Getting him and C.J. at the same time, that's a God thing," McCollum said.
Stroud, who last season became just the fifth rookie in NFL history to throw for over 4,000 yards, has shown that he's more than just a football phenom. A devoted Los Angeles Lakers fan, Stroud shares the same frustrations and passions as any die-hard sports fan when his team underperforms. This level of dedication and empathy is what endears him to fans. "He was like, 'When I watch the Lakers lose, I'm upset,' and he's a professional athlete saying that," McCollum said. "Fans feel that. Like, man, he wants to win, he knows how we're feeling since we've been down for a long time. When your quarterback is possibly the greatest rookie of all time... that's great, that's good for the culture."
The excitement doesn't stop there. McCollum pointed out that the Texans' rise isn't just about Stroud. The team has also added a four-time Pro Bowler at receiver, turning Stroud's dynamic duo into a formidable trio. "I’m glad C.J. and Stefon Diggs are on the field throwing balls, we’ve got our priorities right," McCollum quipped.
Of course, McAfee, a known Colts supporter, couldn't resist reminding McCollum that the Texans only clinched the division after Colts' first-round pick Anthony Richardson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury just four games into the season. McCollum, undeterred, maintained his optimism and confidence in the Texans' future.
This blend of youthful talent and experienced leadership has given Houston fans plenty to be excited about. McCollum's passion for the Texans mirrors the city's renewed hope. "It's been a long time coming," McCollum said. "For 20 years, we were alright, but now, with Stroud and Ryans, we're something special. It's more than just football; it's about the culture and the community. We're ready to make some noise and show the league what Houston is all about."
Stroud's remarkable debut season and McCollum's musical ascent have intertwined to create a narrative of resurgence and pride for Houston. The quarterback's ability to connect with fans on a personal level, coupled with his exceptional performance on the field, has set the stage for a new era in Texans football. And with McCollum's music providing the soundtrack, it's clear that both the Texans and their fans are in for an exciting ride.
As the new season approaches, the buzz around Houston is palpable. The combination of Stroud's promising career and McCollum's chart-topping success reflects a city on the rise. Whether it's on the football field or in the music charts, Houston is ready to shine. And with figures like Stroud and McCollum leading the way, there's no telling just how far they can go.
