The 2023 NFL draft marked a significant moment for the Indianapolis Colts under Chris Ballard, yielding their most substantial player haul yet. The draft strategy focused on filling key positions, bringing in several high-potential players.
However, injuries hampered the impact of the 12-player draft class. CBS Sports ranked the Colts' 2023 draft class at No. 25 league-wide, reflecting the challenges faced by the rookies.
In their first year, some players showed promise. Wide receiver Josh Downs provided a spark, making 68 catches for 771 yards and two touchdowns. Cornerback JuJu Brents and fifth-round tight end Will Mallory also made notable contributions. Yet, most of the 12-pick class did not have a significant impact, with Anthony Richardson sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Before the regular season began, three rookies suffered season-ending injuries: safety Daniel Scott tore his ACL, offensive tackle Jake Witt injured his hip, and edge rusher Titus Leo hurt his knee. Running back Evan Hull also suffered a knee injury in Week 1, ending his season prematurely. Cornerback Julius Brents missed spring workouts due to wrist surgery and didn't play until Week 3 due to a hamstring injury.
Looking ahead, the upcoming season will be pivotal for the majority of the class in Year 2 as they seek to overcome these setbacks and demonstrate their development.
