In a game against the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell had to call it quits during the fifth inning due to an injury. This adds to the challenges he's faced with injuries during the early part of the season.
The Giants revealed after the game that Snell had to leave because of tightness in his left groin. This isn't the first time he's dealt with this kind of issue; earlier in the season, he had a left adductor strain that put him on the 15-day IL for over a month.
Snell had a promising start in the game, showing some of his best stuff this season. He had seven strikeouts and only allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings before the injury forced him to leave. Unfortunately, two more runs were added after he exited the game.
Despite being the reigning National League Cy Young winner, Snell has had a tough time this season. His stats after Sunday's game include a 9.51 ERA, with 31 strikeouts and 14 walks in 23 2/3 innings.
The lefty signed a hefty two-year, $62 million contract with the Giants in free agency, with a player option for the 2025 season. It's uncertain if he'll need to go back on the injured list because of this latest setback, but it wouldn't be ideal for him as he tries to regain his top form from last year.
The injury appeared to happen during a pitch to Alex Verdugo in the fifth inning. Snell walked off the field alongside Giants' senior director of athletic training Dave Groeschner, ending what could have been a standout performance for him.
Let's hope Snell can bounce back quickly and get back to dominating on the mound for the Giants.
