Kellen Moore's Dynamic Offense: Exciting Changes for the Eagles

Written by Published

Kellen Moore’s new-look offense is starting to come together, and the early signs are pretty exciting! Eagle Nation, get ready for some fresh changes in the playbook. As the team kicked off their three-day mandatory minicamp, it was clear that Moore’s influence is already making a mark.

Notable Changes on the Horizon

The biggest buzz around the minicamp has been about Moore's love for pre-snap motion, which was a staple at his previous coaching stops. Last year, the Eagles only used motion before or at the snap 10.9% of the time, ranking them 32nd in the league. By contrast, Moore’s Chargers offense ranked eighth with a 25.9% motion rate. This spring, both DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown have been seen working out of the slot and moving across the formation before the snap, something the Eagles rarely did last season.

When asked about these changes, Smith had some interesting insights. “It gives you more space at times. When you get in bunches and things like that, guys don’t press as much and it kind of confuses the defense. So it just gives you more space and opportunity to do things.”

New Tweaks and More Freedom

Smith also mentioned how Moore's offense offers more autonomy for the receivers. “I think it’s going to be great to get a new style of offense around. Get guys — not have more freedom but be able to do things that we weren’t allowed to do. Move guys around, things like that.”

Sirianni echoed this sentiment, praising Moore's approach: “Kellen has a brilliant offensive mind and a great, unique way of explaining it to the coaches and the players.” It seems like Moore’s tweaks are already being well-received by the team.

A Blend of Old and New

Earlier this offseason, Sirianni described Moore’s task as “meshing” the best parts of the previous system with his own. The Eagles finished eighth in total offense last year but struggled towards the end, which led to Moore replacing former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. This blend of old and new is aimed at addressing a “stale” offensive approach.

Moore has preserved some of the previous terminology while introducing new jargon from his time with the Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. Smith acknowledged the challenge of getting used to the new terminology but emphasized that the core plays remain familiar. “At the end of the day, football is football. Everybody runs the same thing, they just call those things differently.”

What’s Next?

The true impact of Moore’s adjustments won’t be fully visible until the season starts. Sirianni mentioned that they plan to keep things under wraps during the preseason to maintain an element of surprise. However, the early feedback suggests that the players are adapting well and are excited about the potential for more dynamic play.

“Those guys have done a good job,” Sirianni said. “Whether it’s an option route or different types of things with options there — there’s multiple things — but those guys have done a good job learning the system. And Kellen has done a good job teaching the system.”

So, Eagles fans, buckle up! It looks like Kellen Moore's new tweaks are setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
