The New England Patriots are reportedly trading Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, marking the end of his era with the team. The trade, which cannot be finalized until the new league year starts on Wednesday, is said to involve a sixth-round pick going to the Patriots in exchange for Jones, the 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft.
Jones, a Jacksonville native, will return home to serve as the backup quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence. Despite a promising start with the Patriots, including a Pro Bowl alternate selection in his rookie season, Jones struggled in his second year, going 6-8 as a starter in 2022.
His performance declined further in 2023, leading to his benching in favor of other quarterbacks on the roster. By the end of his tenure with the Patriots, Jones had completed 64.9% of his passes for 2,120 yards, with 10 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and 22 sacks.
The trade gives the Patriots a fresh start and additional draft picks, including the No. 3 overall selection in the upcoming draft. This puts them in a position to potentially draft a new quarterback, with North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels among the top prospects.
