Nico Hoerner's Lead-Off Spark Ignites Cubs in 6-5 Win Over Brewers

The Chicago Cubs secured a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers with some standout performances. Nico Hoerner kicked off the game with his first career lead-off home run, while Christopher Morel continued his hot streak with his third homer in as many games. Patrick Wisdom also added to the excitement by sending a ball into the stands.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised his team's offensive effort, noting, “Our offense has been a little quiet lately obviously. Christopher’s in a stretch right now. The homers, I think for most guys, come in bunches, and he’s had a good week.”

This win tied the first divisional series of the year at one apiece, making it an important victory for Counsell in his first series against his former team. Brewers manager Pat Murphy also returned to the dugout after serving a two-game suspension for his role in a brawl with Tampa Bay.

Milwaukee made a late push, narrowing the gap to one run twice. Keegan Thompson replaced Cubs starter Jameson Taillon (3-0) and walked Rhys Hoskins, setting the stage for some tense moments. The Brewers managed to score runs, including a triple by Oliver Dunn and a homer by Blake Perkins, but Chicago held on.

In the eighth inning, Wisdom hit an RBI single, extending the Cubs' lead. Héctor Neris closed the game for the Cubs, securing his sixth save of the season in a tight finish.

Taillon was a standout performer for the Cubs, pitching six strong innings and allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. “He’s really in control and his command is excellent,” Counsell praised Taillon's performance.

The game also saw some injury updates. Cubs' CF Cody Bellinger and RF Seiya Suzuki are progressing well and could return from the 10-day injured list next week. Brewers' LF Joey Wiemer was placed on the 10-day IL with knee discomfort.

Looking ahead, Cubs' RHP Javier Assad will take the mound Sunday, aiming for his first win since April 14, while the Brewers will start RHP Freddy Peralta, who is appealing a five-game suspension for his role in a recent brawl.
