The Philadelphia 76ers are heading into the rest of their season without their superstar, Joel Embiid. The reigning 2023 MVP has been officially ruled out due to a lingering left knee issue, putting an end to a season that never quite clicked for him. It’s a devastating blow for the Sixers, who were hoping to make a strong push in the playoffs with their franchise centerpiece leading the charge.
A Season Cut Short
Embiid’s season came to an abrupt halt after just 19 games, during which he put up respectable numbers—23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. However, something always seemed off. He wasn’t his dominant self, and the efficiency reflected that, shooting just 44.4% from the floor and 29.9% from three-point range. With his knee continuing to be a problem, the Sixers had to make the tough call: shut him down now and ensure he’s ready for the 2025-26 season.
Head coach Nick Nurse expressed his disappointment, acknowledging that while the team knew this was a possibility, they were hoping for a different outcome.
“Obviously, we knew it was a possibility,” Nurse admitted. “I was certainly hoping it wasn’t. Disappointed for sure, right? I think disappointed on a lot of fronts. Not what we hoped at all for this season or for him or anybody, so certainly disappointed.”
What’s Next for Embiid?
The big question now is: what’s next for Embiid? His road to recovery will be in the hands of the medical staff, who will determine the best course of action to get him back to full strength. Nurse made it clear that the team will take no risks when it comes to their superstar’s health.
“Obviously, the medical team is gonna handle all that,” Nurse explained. “Whatever that course of action is, they’ll take care of all that stuff.”
Given Embiid’s history of injuries—knee problems, orbital fractures, thumb sprains, foot issues—the battle is nothing new for him. But it doesn’t make it any less frustrating. The setbacks have prevented him from being at his best during crucial moments, particularly in the postseason. And that’s something that weighs heavily on him.
“100%,” Nurse said when asked about Embiid’s struggles. “I think I’ve had that discussion with him many times, and there’s no doubt about that. I think even the overall course of them, I think even the ones that probably mean the most to him or whatever or not being healthy enough at the right times for postseason play, I think, is what we talked about a lot.”
The Sixers’ New Reality
With Embiid sidelined, the Sixers now have to shift their focus to surviving without their best player. The burden will fall heavily on Tyrese Maxey and Paul George, who must step up and keep the team afloat in the playoff race. The play-in tournament is still within reach, but the margin for error just got a whole lot slimmer.
For Maxey, this is a chance to prove he’s a legitimate star who can carry a team when it matters most. And for George, his veteran leadership and experience will be critical in keeping this squad competitive. The pressure is on, and the Sixers’ season now hinges on how well they can adapt without their MVP.
A Tough Break for a Generational Talent
It’s hard not to feel for Embiid. He’s put in an immense amount of work, year after year, only to have injuries derail his progress at the worst possible times. He’s one of the most dominant big men in the league when healthy, but his body just hasn’t been able to cooperate when it matters most.
The Sixers’ hopes for a deep playoff run may have taken a massive hit, but the long-term priority remains clear: getting Embiid back to full strength. For now, Philadelphia will have to push forward without their superstar, hoping that their remaining roster can rise to the challenge.
The road ahead won’t be easy, but if there’s one thing we know about the Sixers, it’s that they won’t go down without a fight.
