The Philadelphia 76ers have officially hit the halfway mark of the 2024-25 NBA season, sitting at a frustrating 15-26 after their recent loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. This wasn’t the story Sixers fans envisioned after an eventful offseason packed with excitement, including the acquisition of Paul George and several seasoned veterans. But injuries have turned that optimism into a roller coaster of uncertainty. Sunday's loss to the Bucks was just another chapter in what has been an unpredictable and challenging first half.
The biggest hurdle for the Sixers this season has been the lack of consistency. Joel Embiid, the team’s cornerstone, has appeared in just 13 games so far, and the trio of Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey has only shared the court 10 times, managing to complete just seven of those games together. Despite this, the team has shown glimpses of its potential when healthy, going an impressive 6-1 in the games they finished with their core lineup.
"It’s been a never-ending roller coaster," said Andre Drummond after Saturday’s game in Indiana. "It’s been up and down with twists and turns, getting off the roller coaster and back on again. A lot of things have been out of our control as a team. I wish we’d had more time to build chemistry, but injuries and guys being in and out of the lineup have made that difficult. Myself, Tyrese, Paul, Jo—we’ve all been affected."
Building team chemistry has been nearly impossible under these conditions. With 41 games behind them, the Sixers are still trying to figure out their identity on the court. How should the rotations look? What strategies does head coach Nick Nurse want to implement? These are questions they haven’t had the luxury to answer because of their inconsistent roster availability.
"It’s hard to build a consistent chemistry when you don’t know who’s going to play on a regular basis," Drummond explained. "Hopefully, in the second half of the season, we can have a more consistent rotation of guys, including myself."
Yet, despite the hurdles and setbacks, Drummond remains optimistic and has a message for fans who may have started to lose faith.
"Stay strapped in," Drummond urged. "Don’t bail out on the roller coaster because it gets better at the end of the tunnel. There’s so much good for this team. There’s so much opportunity. There are so many chances for us to do something special this year, even after the tough start. My hopes are high. I know my teammates feel the same way, and the organization does too. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be putting in the work we’re doing. We all have a chance to do something great."
If there’s a silver lining to the season so far, it’s that when the Sixers have their key players on the floor, they’ve been tough to beat. The challenge now is to stay healthy and find some rhythm during the second half of the season.
Fans may feel frustrated by the team’s struggles, but this squad has shown flashes of brilliance. The potential for a turnaround is real, and the stakes are high. The Sixers know they have a window to make something special happen, and the players are determined to seize it.
Up next, the team heads to Denver to face the defending champion Nuggets. It’s a daunting task, but the Sixers have a chance to finish their road trip on a positive note. A strong performance could set the tone for the second half of their season—one that everyone in the organization hopes will be less turbulent and far more rewarding.
While the first half has been marked by adversity, the Sixers’ season isn’t over. As Drummond put it, the ride may be wild, but the destination is worth the journey. So, Sixers fans, hang on tight—the best might just be yet to come.
