After a three-day tryout with the Denver Broncos at rookie minicamp earlier this month, record-setting quarterback John Matocha is getting another shot, this time in the Canadian Football League.
Matocha is set to sign with the Toronto Argonauts, according to a report from KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. This move comes after Matocha's impressive performance at the Colorado School of Mines (Division II), where he set an NCAA record with 162 touchdown passes over four seasons and rushed for 28 more, totaling an astounding 190 touchdowns. Talk about a scoring machine!
Even though the Broncos didn't offer him a contract, Matocha left a strong impression. "He’s been fun to work with," said Broncos coach Sean Payton on May 11. "He’s sharp, he’s smart and has a lot of energy. We had him here for the local pro day that we were allowed to have, and it’s good to have him back.” Matocha himself was thrilled about the experience, saying, “[Coach Payton's] obviously a very smart coach and a great guy. He runs this place really well and like I said, I’m super happy to be here.”
The Argonauts need the extra depth at quarterback after losing Chad Kelly to a suspension. Kelly was suspended for a minimum of nine games following an investigation that found he violated the league's gender-based violence policy. Kelly, who initially denied the allegations, ended up deleting his statement on Twitter, but the suspension stood. This left a gap in the Argonauts' roster, which Matocha is now set to fill.
Kelly's absence is a significant blow as he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2023. With Matocha joining the quarterback lineup, he'll be competing alongside Nick Arbuckle, Cameron Dukes, and Bryan Scott. The Argonauts are gearing up to open their 2024 regular season against the BC Lions on Sunday, June 9.
Here’s to hoping Matocha brings his record-setting magic to the CFL and makes the most of this exciting new opportunity!
