Highlights from the Game
- Ezequiel Tovar kicked off the ninth inning with his 20th double of the season.
- Elias Diaz brought Tovar home with a single, saving the Rockies from their eighth shutout of the season.
- Colorado’s best chance to score early fizzled when Jake Cave grounded into a double play and Michael Toglia struck out after back-to-back singles by Diaz and Brenton Doyle in the second inning.
Exciting Debut
One of the bright spots for the Rockies came from second baseman Adael Amador. In his major league debut, Amador smacked a leadoff single to right on the first pitch he faced from Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante—a 94.1 mph fastball. Amador, the Rockies' top prospect, was called up from Double-A Hartford to replace Brendan Rodgers, who’s on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Pitching Woes
Ty Blach, the Rockies' starter, struggled on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings. His ERA climbed from 4.54 to 4.84. The Cardinals' offensive charge was led by Alex Burelson, who hit a leadoff homer in the third, and Masyn Winn, who contributed a two-run bloop single in the fourth.
Pallante’s Performance
Cardinals' pitcher Andre Pallante, despite a 6.18 ERA entering the game, managed to keep the Rockies' bats mostly silent. He pitched five efficient innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six and walking one. Until Tovar’s ninth-inning double, St. Louis relievers had allowed no hits and retired 11 Rockies hitters in a row.
Looking Ahead
After splitting the four-game series in St. Louis, the Rockies will head to Minnesota for a three-game series starting Monday night. Will they find their offensive rhythm and come out swinging? Stay tuned to see how they fare against the Twins.
