Devaughn Vele isn't your average rookie. Despite being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round, he's already 26, turning 27 in his debut season. Vele's journey to the NFL is unique—he spent two years on a mission in Samoa after high school before walking on at Utah in 2019.
His college career hit a snag in 2020 due to COVID-19, granting him an extra year of eligibility. Over the next three seasons, Vele made a mark with 121 receptions, 1,677 yards, and nine touchdowns in 38 games. Despite his impressive stats and physical attributes (standing at 6-4 and 203 pounds with a 4.47 speed), his age was a concern for many scouts, which led to his late-round selection.
"I knew my age would be a question," Vele said after being drafted. "But at the end of the day, it's about performance. If you can play, age shouldn't matter. I'm grateful to the Broncos for taking a chance on me, and I'm ready to give my all."
With veteran Tim Patrick's impending free agency, Vele could step into a significant role on the team. Coach Sean Payton sees him as a potential replacement, noting his maturity and playing style similar to Patrick's.
While being an older rookie has its drawbacks, Vele's maturity and life experiences could benefit the team. "My mission taught me responsibility and humility," Vele shared. "I'm ready to learn and contribute wherever the team needs me."
General Manager George Paton praised Vele's talent and readiness, emphasizing his maturity and skills on the field. "He's a prototype player—big, fast, and plays a mature game," Paton said. "We had a clear vision for him fitting in with what we're doing."
Teaming up with first-round pick Bo Nix, Vele is excited about the opportunity. "Bo's a great leader and player," he said. "I'm thrilled to catch passes from him and bring our college rivalry to the NFL."
Vele and Nix will kick off their NFL journey at rookie minicamp next week, ready to make an impact in Denver.
