The world's No. 1 player, Scottie Scheffler, will indeed see the weekend at the U.S. Open. When he walked off Pinehurst No. 2 around lunchtime on Friday, after a surprising birdie-less 74, he wasn't sure he'd make the cut. But the Masters champion's 5-over 145 total turned out to be just enough, matching the cut number. In total, 74 players matched or beat that score, while 82 players are going home.
Here's a quick rundown of some other highlights and disappointments from the tournament:
-
Tiger Woods missed the cut by two strokes, ending at 7 over after struggling to rally on Friday with an opening 74.
-
Viktor Hovland, who seemed to be on a roll after his solo third-place finish at the PGA Championship last month, opened with a 78. He shot ten shots better on Friday, but his 6-over total was still one too many.
-
Max Homa and Nick Dunlap also missed the cut, both hitting the 6-over mark. Homa, who tied for third at the Masters, and Dunlap, who turned pro after winning as an amateur earlier this season on the PGA Tour, just couldn't make the cut.
-
Among the past U.S. Open champions not making it to the weekend were Webb Simpson, Gary Woodland, and Lucas Glover. Two-time PGA champion Justin Thomas, who finished T8 at the PGA in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., last month, shot 11 over for his two rounds at Pinehurst and also missed the cut.
-
Of the dozen LIV Golf players in the field, four missed the cut: Eugenio Chacarra (+8), Dustin Johnson (+9), Adrian Meronk (+12), and Phil Mickelson (+15). Mickelson, who did not make a single birdie in two rounds, still has one more U.S. Open remaining on the five-year exemption he earned for winning the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah.
Excitingly, three LIV players are in the top 20 heading into the weekend: Bryson DeChambeau (T2), Tyrrell Hatton (T9), and Sergio Garcia (T16). Also notable is David Puig from LIV Golf, who made the cut and in doing so secured a spot on the Spanish Olympic golf team.
So, while some big names have bowed out, the competition is heating up with a mix of seasoned pros and rising stars ready to take on the weekend at the U.S. Open!
