The Philadelphia 76ers had a golden opportunity to edge closer to the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night. With the Chicago Bulls suffering a defeat earlier in the day against the Phoenix Suns, the Sixers had the perfect setup to capitalize when they hosted the Brooklyn Nets. A win would have put them just half a game behind the Bulls. But instead of seizing the moment, the Sixers collapsed yet again, extending their losing streak to seven straight games.
Brooklyn took control of the game, leading by as many as 17 points at one stage. Though the Sixers managed to claw their way back into contention, the night ended in heartbreak when Nic Claxton tipped in a missed shot from Keon Johnson at the buzzer, securing a 105-103 victory for the Nets. It was another crushing defeat for Philadelphia, and their struggles continue to mount as the season winds down.
Defensive Woes Haunt the Sixers Again
One of the most glaring issues for the Sixers? Their porous defense. Brooklyn dominated inside, racking up 60 points in the paint. The Nets practically had a layup drill going, effortlessly slicing through the Sixers' defense and finishing at the rim. Time and again, Philadelphia’s perimeter defenders were beaten off the dribble, leaving their interior players scrambling.
Paul George didn't sugarcoat the issue in the postgame press conference.
“There’s a lot we can do,” George said bluntly. “It’s just a matter of if we want to do it or not. We’re still having the same conversations, and here we are, 60 games—just about 60 games in. It’s unacceptable. Just the layups, the amount of layups, uncontested at times, that we give up. It’s just unacceptable.”
George’s frustration is completely justified. At this point in the season, the same problems persist, and the Sixers have yet to find an answer. With only 26 games left, the clock is ticking, and their playoff hopes are slipping away. If they want to turn things around, they need to lock in defensively and stop giving up easy baskets.
Can the Sixers Still Salvage Their Season?
Despite the ongoing struggles, the Sixers still have a chance to climb back into contention. The upcoming schedule gives them an immediate opportunity to bounce back, starting with a home game against the Bulls on Monday night. Given how Chicago has also been inconsistent this season, this is a game Philadelphia must approach with a must-win mentality.
The biggest concern, however, is whether they can rise to the challenge. It’s no secret that reigning MVP Joel Embiid hasn’t been himself since returning from injury. His impact, particularly on defense, hasn’t been at the dominant level fans are accustomed to seeing. Without Embiid anchoring the paint, the Sixers have been vulnerable inside, and opposing teams are taking full advantage.
That puts even more pressure on Paul George and the rest of the team to step up. The Sixers cannot afford to keep relying on Embiid to bail them out. Everyone needs to be more engaged on both ends of the floor.
Will Philly’s Mindset Change?
For all the talk about adjustments and effort, it really comes down to one thing: mindset. Do the Sixers actually want to fight for their season? Or are they content with letting it slip away? Paul George made it clear that the decision rests on the players.
“I mean, it just comes down to what we want to do,” George emphasized. “It comes down to what we want to do. Do we want to leave everything on the floor and play as hard as we can and see where that gets us? I’m all for it, but we’ve got to come together, and we’ve got to play hard.”
His words highlight what has become the defining question for this team. The talent is there. Even without a fully healthy Embiid, the Sixers have enough firepower to compete. But do they have the drive, the heart, and the commitment to put it all together?
The Road Ahead
Time is running out, and excuses won’t cut it anymore. Every game from this point forward is critical. The Eastern Conference standings remain tight, and one good winning streak could change everything. However, that won’t happen unless the Sixers make real, tangible improvements—particularly on the defensive end.
Facing the Bulls on Monday provides a perfect test. Will the Sixers respond with urgency, or will they continue down this frustrating path of inconsistency? With just a handful of weeks left in the regular season, their destiny is still in their hands—but for how much longer?
Philadelphia fans have seen this story before, and they’re tired of the same disappointing script. The Sixers have an opportunity to rewrite the narrative, but they have to decide if they’re willing to fight for it.
