Steve Kerr Reflects on Klay Thompson's Departure and Lasting Legacy with the Warriors

Before USA Basketball men’s senior national team coach Steve Kerr answered any questions on Saturday, he took a moment to reflect on Klay Thompson. The departure of Thompson from the Golden State Warriors marks the end of an era filled with incredible achievements and heartfelt memories.

"I just want to say thank you, Klay Thompson – 13 incredible years, 10 of which I was there for what he did for the team, the organization, for the Bay Area, for me personally, the relationship that we had, all the incredible success," Kerr began. "But more importantly, just going through it all together has been so meaningful, so amazing, and we're going to miss Klay.”

Thompson, a pivotal player in the Warriors' four championship titles and a key figure in the NBA’s 3-point revolution, has decided to move on. After a remarkable stint with the Warriors, he has reached a deal to play for the Dallas Mavericks. It’s a new chapter for both Thompson and the Warriors, one that Kerr acknowledges with a mix of gratitude and sorrow. "We wish him the best," Kerr said. “These things rarely go like you want, where you get to draw it up and execute it and everybody goes out together. We were hoping that could happen, but it didn't, and we wish Klay well, but we love him and we'll miss him.”

Thompson's tenure with the Warriors was nothing short of legendary. Drafted as the No. 11 pick in 2011, he quickly established himself as an instrumental player, alongside Steph Curry. Together, they transformed the league with their sharpshooting prowess. Over 13 seasons, Thompson averaged 19.6 points and shot an impressive 41.3% from beyond the arc. His contributions were crucial in securing the Warriors' championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

Reflecting on the transition, Kerr admitted that Thompson’s departure hasn't fully sunk in yet. "Klay and I talked during this time of his decision, and so we've been able to share some things," Kerr noted. "He gave me a really good description of his frame of mind. And so I completely understand – sometimes in life, you need a shift, just a fresh start, no matter what profession. Sometimes, you just need a change. And I think that's it. That's the easiest way to describe it.”

However, the reality of the situation will become more palpable once training camp begins without Thompson’s familiar presence. "But I can't sit here in July and describe what my emotions are when nothing's happened. I normally didn't see Klay in the summer. Nobody saw him for three months. Then, the first day of camp on media day, there he is, and you catch up. So it'll be weird on media day when he's not there.”

Looking ahead, Kerr is certain that Thompson’s legacy will endure within the Warriors organization. He envisions a future where Thompson’s number is retired and a statue of him stands proudly outside of Chase Center. "He'll be beloved by his teammates and coaches and our fans forever," Kerr said. "It's never easy, but I think it will all work out."

In the grand narrative of the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson's chapter is one of triumph, resilience, and unforgettable moments. His departure signals the end of a significant era, but it also sets the stage for new beginnings. As the Warriors and their fans bid farewell to Thompson, they do so with immense respect and admiration for a player who gave his all, both on and off the court.
