In a move that's sending waves through the world of football, Thomas Tuchel has officially been named the new head coach of the England national team. This exciting announcement came straight from the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday, putting an end to months of speculation and anticipation. The 51-year-old German coach, known for his strategic brilliance and ability to bring teams together, will officially take the reins starting January 1st. Until then, Lee Carsley, who’s been holding the fort as the interim boss, will continue to guide England through their upcoming UEFA Nations League clashes against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.
Tuchel’s appointment marks the conclusion of a search that kicked off in July when Gareth Southgate stepped down following England’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott spearheaded the search, setting out to find someone with a proven track record, capable of delivering results on the grandest stages—enter Tuchel, a name synonymous with success across Europe’s top leagues.
This new chapter for England has football fans buzzing. Tuchel’s resume reads like a football manager’s dream: former head coach at Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and most recently Bayern Munich. He’s bagged an impressive 11 major trophies, including the prestigious 2021 Champions League with Chelsea. That victory was particularly special for English fans as it featured some of England’s finest talents like Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Mason Mount, who is now with Manchester United. On top of that, Tuchel worked closely with England captain Harry Kane during his stint at Bayern Munich.
For Tuchel, the chance to lead the England national team is a massive honor. In his statement following the announcement, he couldn’t contain his excitement: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."
Tuchel’s new assistant coach, Anthony Barry, adds even more excitement to this dynamic duo. The pair first crossed paths at Chelsea, and their partnership was so successful that Tuchel convinced Barry to join him at Bayern in April 2023. Barry, who is only 38, has quite the résumé himself. He’s worked with the Belgium national team, the Republic of Ireland, and most recently, Portugal under head coach Roberto Martinez. Together, Tuchel and Barry are set to bring a wealth of experience and tactical acumen to the England squad.
Tuchel expressed his confidence in the partnership with Barry, emphasizing their shared mission to bring success to England: "Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust, and I am looking forward to starting our journey together."
The FA couldn’t be more thrilled with their hire. In fact, they see Tuchel’s appointment as a major coup. The FA had made it clear from the outset that they wanted someone with a proven record in either the Premier League or on the international stage, and Tuchel ticked every box. His knack for winning big games and his ability to cultivate a winning culture made him stand out from the pack. In Wednesday’s statement, Bullingham said, "We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world, and Anthony Barry, who is one of the best English coaches to support him."
The FA’s recruitment process wasn’t a walk in the park, though. They were methodical and thorough, especially after Southgate’s resignation. Bullingham explained, "Our recruitment process has been very thorough. Before the Euros, we had a contingency plan and outlined exactly the qualities we would be looking for in a coach. Since Gareth resigned, we have worked through the candidate pool, meeting a number of coaches and evaluating them against that criteria."
It’s no secret that Tuchel wasn’t the only candidate under consideration. Sources close to the process revealed that the FA also held talks with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, among others. But in the end, Tuchel’s experience, drive, and passion won out. Bullingham continued, "Thomas was very impressive and stood out with his vast expertise and his drive. Anthony is a top English talent and also has international experience with Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. Fundamentally, we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we believe they will do just that."
The ultimate goal? Winning the World Cup in 2026. The FA has made no bones about the fact that they’re targeting that prize, and they believe Tuchel is the man to lead them there. "Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026," Bullingham added.
As England’s fans eagerly await Tuchel’s official start in January, it’s worth recognizing the role interim coach Lee Carsley has played during this transitional period. Carsley has stepped up to the plate with grace, keeping the team competitive and focused. Bullingham was quick to offer his thanks: "I would like to thank Lee for stepping up and doing everything we asked of him—he is a very talented coach and a major part of our England pathway. He will now focus on retaining the U21 EURO title in the summer."
These are truly exciting times for English football, not just at the senior level, but at the U21 level as well. With Tuchel and Barry at the helm, the future looks bright, and the prospect of bringing home silverware has never felt more real. England fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming years, and the January start date for Tuchel’s tenure can’t come soon enough!
