After an intense two-week search, authorities have finally located the body of missing University of Missouri student, Riley Strain, in the Cumberland River. The 22-year-old's body was discovered eight miles downstream from where he was last seen. Strain had gone missing on March 8 after being asked to leave Luke’s 32 Bridge in Downtown Nashville. Despite wearing the same shirt as when he disappeared, authorities do not suspect any foul play in his death.
The discovery of Strain's body was initially reported by barge operators near the river. They spotted the body while working to remove an object from the river. The Nashville Fire Department responded promptly, retrieving Strain's body. Chief John Drake of the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed the identity of the body as Riley Strain.
The search for Strain involved a massive effort, including air, boat, and ground searches, with multiple agencies and volunteers participating. The extensive search garnered national and social media attention, leading to various speculations about his disappearance and death. Despite the speculation, authorities stressed that there was no evidence of foul play.
Footage from businesses and the police showed Strain stumbling around Nashville after leaving the bar. The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is investigating whether he was overserved alcohol that night. Luke’s 32 Bridge maintains that Strain was only served one alcoholic beverage and two waters during his time at the bar.
The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is collaborating with local law enforcement to determine where else Strain was served alcohol that night. All establishments questioned have been cooperative, according to an agency spokesman, and the final report will be released to the public after the investigation concludes.
Authorities have informed Strain's family about the recovery of his body. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
