Scammers are getting craftier these days—and now they’re even using AI to make their schemes sound more convincing. The Buda Police Department is putting out a big heads-up to the community after seeing a spike in a new lottery scam.
Before anything else, officers want folks to remember one important thing: real Texas Lottery winners never have to pay a fee to claim their prize. If someone tells you otherwise, that’s your sign to walk away.
Here’s how the scam usually plays out:
• You get a message saying you’ve won a lottery prize.
• Then they claim you must pay a “finder’s fee” or some kind of charge to receive the money.
• The message may sound legitimate—especially with scammers using AI—but it’s all smoke and mirrors.
The Texas Lottery also doesn’t reach out to winners directly. They don't even know who the winner is until that person shows up with their actual ticket.
If anything feels off or you think you might’ve been targeted, the Buda Police Department encourages you to reach out at 512-312-1001.
