President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa recently announced plans for a government of national unity, aiming to address the country's most pressing issues. Job creation, economic growth, high living costs, service delivery, and tackling crime and corruption are all top priorities, as emphasized in a marathon ANC meeting.
Following the recent general election where the ANC secured just over 40% of the vote and 158 seats, falling short of a majority, Ramaphosa acknowledges the need for partnerships to form a government. After extensive talks with party members, he extended an invitation to all opposition parties, signaling a departure from speculation about forming a minority government or seeking coalition with only a few major parties.
Ramaphosa stressed the importance of rebuilding social cohesion after what he described as a "toxic and divisive" election campaign. He emphasized the need for a national dialogue, indicating that talks have already begun with several parties including the Economic Freedom Fighters, Inkatha Freedom Party, Democratic Alliance, National Freedom Party, and Patriotic Alliance.
In his vision for a government of national unity, Ramaphosa highlighted core values such as respect for the constitution, the rule of law, social justice, equity, human dignity, non-racialism, and non-sexism. He urged all parties to commit to these shared principles to foster nation-building and social cohesion in South Africa's diverse society.
