Canadian Couple Wins $100K Lottery, Plans to Help Family and Celebrate Life’s Biggest Moments
A Canadian couple is celebrating a life-changing $100,000 lottery win, and they already know exactly how they'll use the money. Instead of spending it all on themselves, they're putting family first.
Mona and Walter Merkley of Grande Prairie, Alberta, claimed the $100,000 prize after their Lotto 6/49 with Extra ticket matched the final six digits of the Extra draw on May 2: 1965203.
Walter said the exciting moment happened when he scanned the ticket and immediately realized something incredible had happened.
“Oh my God, I won some money!” he recalled.
His first reaction was to rush home and tell Mona the good news. She was just as excited when she heard they had won.
The timing couldn't have been better. The couple has a busy year ahead, including four weddings and a celebration of life, making the unexpected prize especially meaningful.
They already have big plans for the winnings, including:
- Helping both of their mothers
- Giving their son extra financial support for his upcoming wedding
- Setting aside education savings for their grandchildren
- Planning a long-awaited trip to New Brunswick next year
Walter described the win as both phenomenal and truly life-changing, saying it gives the family the opportunity to support loved ones while creating new memories together.
The lucky Lotto 6/49 and Extra ticket was purchased at the Circle K store located at 9109 92nd Avenue in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
