Jessica Sesera got the ultimate Mother’s Day surprise — a $100,000 lottery win she never saw coming. The Castle Hayne mom said she doesn’t usually buy scratch-off tickets, but decided to try her luck on Mother’s Day anyway. That last-minute decision turned into a life-changing moment.
Sesera picked up a $30 Carolina Black Premier scratch-off ticket at a Food Lion on Castle Hayne Road in Wilmington. She scratched the ticket while sitting in her car and was completely stunned when she realized she’d hit a six-figure prize.
“I was like, ‘There’s no way this is happening,’” she said, adding that she honestly thought the ticket couldn’t be real.
A few days later, on Thursday, May 14, she visited lottery headquarters to officially claim her prize. After taxes, she walked away with $72,018.
Here’s how she plans to use the money:
- Pay off bills
- Buy a new car
- Help support her growing family
The timing made the win even more special. Sesera is already a mom of one and is also expecting another child.
The Carolina Black Premier game first launched in July and originally featured:
- Three $4 million top prizes
- Six $100,000 prizes
Right now, two $4 million prizes and three $100,000 prizes are still waiting to be claimed.
Lottery officials also shared that education programs in New Hanover County received $11.3 million in funding from lottery proceeds last year.
