Two men, Dominic M. Miller and Lyndell Mays, have been charged with a range of crimes, including second-degree murder, connected to a shooting at a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory. The incident, which occurred on Feb. 14, resulted in one fatality and 22 injuries. The shooting took place in front of Kansas City's Union Station, amidst a crowd of over a million attendees.
According to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, the altercation that led to the shooting began as a verbal argument between Mays and another individual. The situation quickly escalated, with Mays drawing his handgun, prompting others, including Miller, to do the same. Multiple shots were fired, injuring over 20 people aged 8-47. Videos shared on social media captured the chaotic scene as parade-goers scattered in fear.
During the investigation, Mays admitted to firing two shots, acknowledging that he shouldn't have pulled out a gun. Miller, on the other hand, estimated firing four to five shots. Tragically, one of Miller's shots fatally struck Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two and a local DJ. The family of Lopez-Galvan expressed gratitude for the identification of the suspects but emphasized that justice must be served for all the victims of the shooting.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves stated that the investigation is ongoing, with detectives working tirelessly to apprehend anyone else responsible for the shootings. Both Miller and Mays were hospitalized after being struck by gunfire during the incident. The charges against them come after two juveniles were previously charged in connection with the shooting. Baker stressed that the investigation is far from over, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Despite the progress made in identifying and charging suspects, Baker emphasized that there are still individuals who need to be held accountable for their actions that day. She assured the community that the authorities are committed to pursuing justice for all those affected by the tragedy.
