Georgia residents are spending big on lottery tickets, ranking among the top lottery spenders in the country, according to a new study by LendingTree.

The study found that Georgians spent more than $5.6 billion on lottery tickets in 2024, the latest year included in the report. Players received nearly $3.8 billion in winnings.

On a per-person basis, Georgia ranked fifth nationwide, with residents spending nearly $500 each on lottery games. That's significantly higher than the national average of just over $300 per person.

Only four states ranked ahead of Georgia:

  • Massachusetts
  • Virginia
  • Rhode Island
  • North Carolina

Massachusetts took the top spot for lottery spending.

Meanwhile, lottery excitement is building as two major jackpots continue to climb, giving players more reasons to check their tickets.

Here's what was up for grabs:

  • Mega Millions: An estimated $433 million jackpot for Friday night's drawing, with a one-time cash option of $178.6 million.
  • Powerball: An estimated $674 million jackpot for Saturday's drawing, with a cash option of $283.9 million.

With billions spent on lottery tickets across the country, Georgia remains one of the nation's biggest lottery-playing states.
