GoFundMe has addressed concerns about a page set up after Donald Trump was fined in his civil fraud judgment, saying it doesn't violate their rules. The page, created for the former president after Judge Arthur Engoron's ruling that he owes about $355 million for fraud, has faced criticism on social media.
In the ruling, it was found that Trump and executives at The Trump Organization committed fraud by inflating asset values for better terms from lenders and insurers. Initially seeking $250 million, New York Attorney General Letitia James increased the damages sought to $370 million, with a 9 percent interest rate adding up to over $450 million.
Elena Cardone started the GoFundMe page titled "Stand with Trump; Fund the $355M Unjust Judgment." It has raised about $414,000. Some on social media believe the page violates fundraising rules for convicted criminals and should be shut down.
Experts, including former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi, see the fundraiser as part of a larger financial deception by Trump's circle. However, Jalen Drummond, the director of public affairs at GoFundMe, stated that the fundraiser complies with their terms of service.
Trump plans to appeal the ruling, calling Engoron "crooked" and James "totally corrupt." James sees the ruling as a significant victory, emphasizing that no one, not even Trump, is above the law.
