Maryland Grandfather Wins $50K Using Grandkids’ Ages in Lottery

Essex resident John Lang had a lucky streak last week when his creative number-picking paid off big. Taking a break from buying lottery tickets for about a month, Lang decided to try his hand at the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 game.

Heading to Mace Liquors on Mace Avenue in Baltimore County, he chose numbers inspired by the ages of his grandchildren—a personal touch that turned out to be pure luck. The next day, he returned to the store and handed his ticket to a clerk to check.

“I asked them to check my numbers. They said, ‘Mr. John, you just won $50,000!’” Lang recalled, still thrilled by the surprise.

The unexpected win will go toward home improvement projects and some savings for the future, giving Lang a mix of fun and practical benefits.

It’s a reminder that sometimes a simple, heartfelt approach—like choosing numbers that matter to you—can lead to life-changing results.
